5 Great Nasi Lemak you need to Try

by Ali Photography FriedChillies on Mon, April 17, 2017

Rich and savory rice, spicy and sweet sambal, crunchy ikan bilis and roasted peanuts. Here are 5 great nasi lemak places we think should be on on radar...

The Kings of Breakfast

Good ol' nasi lemak, the sheer mention is enough to make me giddy with excitement. Each grain of rice is coated with rich coconut milk, served with a smoking hot sambal, crunchy ikan bilis and kacang. Oh forgive me if I make you drool or your stomach rumble, but we LOVE nasi lemak at FriedChillies. Here are some of our favourites in Klang Valley...

Warung Pak Hassan

Obviously one of our favorite nasi lemak is in Kampung Baru. Warung Pak Hassan is located right across Menara DBKL. If you see a line of people peeking out from an alleyway, yup that's the one. The Nasi Lemak here is steamed in a wooden barrel hence the aroma is heightened and the rice is crumbly. Here you self-serve your own plate of nasi lemak to your liking. Our favourite is nasi lemak with the traditional kangkung, and sambal sotong. The other star of the shop is their kari dhal kaki ayam, which you can take unlimited amounts of. You can enjoy it with their fluffy roti canai, or mix it with your nasi lemak, your choice.

Location: 31, Jalan Raja Abdullah, Kampung Baru, 50300 Kuala Lumpur

Nasi Lemak Angah

Nasi Lemak Angah doesn't have a physical shop at the moment, as they operate on delivery only. The nasi lemak here comes in snug 'lil packets, and it has a green tint. No the nasi lemak is not going hulk on you it's just they incorporate pandan juice while cooking their nasi lemak. The pandan juice intensifies the aroma of the nasi lemak towards new heights. The sambal here is on the sweet side with a nice balance of heat and sourness. Although the nasi lemak is good enough to be eaten on its own, it's a shame to not add in their awesome lauk. Must try the sambal kerang with hints of kaffir lime in it.

Warung Sinarnor

Warung Sinarnor at Jalan Chow Sow Lin has been serving nasi lemak for 48 years. Nasi Lemak here is still cooked over a wood fire, a method passed down from mother to daughter. Hence the sambal here has a distinct smoky taste. The recipes and cooking method are closely monitored by Puan Samsinar, who is the matriarch here. Her watchful eye is what keeps the taste consistent through the years. We love eating their nasi lemak with ayam masak merah which is pieces of fried chicken is doused in a spicy tomato based sauce. And ooo... the bergedel is pretty awesome here too.

Location: Jalan 2/89c, Chan Sow Lin, 55200 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Zali Corner

Head over to Wangsa Maju for some rendang kerang with your nasi lemak at Zali Corner. The recipe is perfected over the years, and the place is packed in the morning. The rendang here is the southern kind, a rendang kuning that has a creamy turmeric flavor. The nasi lemak here is crumbly with light hints of coconut milk and pandan, perfect lah with their Melaka-style lauk and mild sambal. At Zali Corner they also serve crunchy roti canai if you don't feel like having nasi lemak for breakfast.

Location: Jalan 3/27a, Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Warung Rindu

It's late in the night and you are hungry, where and what do you want to eat? Well how about some Nasi Lemak with burung puyuh at Warung Rindu? Warung Rindu is open till late at night serving hot nasi lemak with two of their signature lauk, burung puyuh goreng or ayam goreng berempah. The nasi lemak is rich with coconut milk and it is perfect, not too ceroi nor sticky and all individually wrapped in banana leaf. The sambal is cooked lovingly for hours till it reaches a deep crimson colour. Best of all one nasi lemak bungkus here is still only RM1. There are no fancy lauks here, just good old nasi lemak and fried poultry that is cooked to perfection.

Location: Jalan Kubur, Off Pantai Expressway, Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur
