Fancy a Cup of Tea?

Afternoon teas have become so trendy in the past few years and here at Friedchillies we are not complaining! With more affordable and exciting options to the usual 'tea and scones' becoming available, everyone can now sample this English tradition!

warm buttery scones with jam and real clotted cream, guaranteed to melt in your mouth!

This tradition seems to bear its beginnings from a woman named Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, who used to get hungry in between breakfast and dinner, and would get her servants to smuggle in biscuits, cake and sandwiches for her to enjoy with a pot of tea. Scared of being ridiculed at first due to her 'unconventional eating habits' (remember, this was in the 1800's!) Anna would invite her girlfriends over for 'Tea and a walking the fields' in the privacy of her home.

Her girlfriends carried on the tradition, and 'afternoon tea' soon became a popular social event. Later, the opening of establishments such as Lyons Tea House and London Tea Garden became a place for women to meet and socialize (with the company of a male chaperone of course!) With the need for male chaperone's long gone, these are our favourite five places to enjoy an 'Afternoon Tea' here in Klang Valley!

Posh Tea - Carcosa Sri Negara
For a true English Afternoon Tea experience, it doesn't get any more authentic than Carcosa Seri Negara. Enjoy a wonderful English tea set of sandwiches, (Smoked Salmon with Horseradish, Cucumber with Creamy Cheese and Egg Mayonnaise with Fresh Watercress.) Pastries (which include Carrot and Walnut Cake, Hazel nut Chocolate Brownie, Raspberry Macaroons), Plain and Raisin Scones served with Clotted Cream and Strawberry Rose Petal Jam, and last but not least fresh Strawberries with Chantilly Cream.

All this comes with a pot of tea of choice, surrounded by the perfectly manicured gardens of this Elite 6 star hotel, who's past visitors include Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. If you're dreaming of wicker chairs and Gin & Tonics in the afternoon, or feeling particularly 'British', this is the place to be. This set menu costs RM60++ per person, a definite splurge but if you're serious about your afternoon teas, you have to do this at least once.

Organic Tea - Yogi Tree
If you're looking for an afternoon tea that is healthy as well as delicious, this is the place to go. Yogi tree uses fresh organic ingredients to serve up the usual favourites. An afternoon tea set at Yogi Tree includes a pot of organic tea (choose from their line of 'Healing' teas which include interesting concoctions such as Ginseng, Red Dates, Longan and Wolfberry, and the sweetly subdued Organic Rosebuds and Oolong) a set of finger sandwiches made with premium 'natural' bread, organic scones using unbleached flour, and one of their dessert items, made with real butter!

This heavenly Tea set will set you back RM38++ for two. Yogi Tree is part cafe, part yogi shop, so you can browse for yoga items while waiting for your food. The Yogi Tree Afternoon Tea set is wholesome, natural, organic yummy-ness at it's best!

Adventurous Tea - Le Meridien Hotel
Le Meridien brings a new twist to the 'Afternoon Tea' franchise by introducing Taste Of Discovery Afternoon Tea, a thematic afternoon tea set menu that contains a featured 'discovery' ingredient every month. With the month of May carrying a 'Spice' theme, you can expect to sample savoury and sweet items, among our favourites are the Caraway Cinnamon Spices Croissant filled with Roasted Butter Apple, the Chicken Rendang Croquette, the Chicken Rendang Pie, the Curry Prawns A La Plancha, and the delectable Mushrooms in Tom Yum Cream. The sweet items such as the Ginger Tiramisu cake and the stunning Amaretto Cherry Cheese Cake will also have you sitting back in delight.

The Afternoon tea here is served in a triple-tier with a free flow of either Illy Coffee or Ronnefeldt Tea, making this an unbelievable bargain at only RM 32++ per person. Next month's theme is 'Sugar' and for the month of July the theme will be 'Illy Coffee', so each month customers are in for an interesting dining experience!

Simple Tea - Delicious
For those who like it simple, Delicious serves a decent afternoon tea with all the trimmings, in a comfortable laid-back environment that is just perfect to rest tired legs after a spot of week-end shopping. Served in a triple tier, the set consists of deliciously warm buttery scones served with preserved jam and real cream, assorted finger sandwiches, Duck Confit Filo Pastry, fresh strawberries dipped in chocolate, hand-rolled chocolate truffles and savoury rosemary and cheese cookies. You also get to chose a slice of cake from the cake display, including the heavenly Chocolate brownie which comes covered in chocolate sauce and a side of vanilla ice-cream.

This set for two costs RM 59.90 and includes tea for two people. Unlike a lot of other places, Delicious serves 4 scones instead of 2, which means that this triple-tier is truly for sharing, so don't worry, you won't be arguing with your mother over crumbs!

Quaint Lil' Tea – Teapot Cafe

For a quaint little Afternoon tea in a quaint little tea house environment, The Teapot Cafe in SS2 comes up trumps for simplicity and value. The Devonshire set comes with 2 scones served with jam and clotted cream, tuna sandwiches, a slice of cake of choice from the cake counter and a pot of tea for two. And if 1 scone each is simply not enough (we agree this is true!) order a side of scones for only RM 3.50, served with real clotted cream and absolutely yummy!

The Devonshire set cost RM20.50, but if you aren't looking for a heavy tea, you can even opt for scones with a pot of tea, or the yummy home-made chocolate éclairs. Old aunty's have been known to frequent this cafe as their afternoon hangout and rumour has it that they will fight you for the last scone, so coming early, say 3pm on week-ends is advised!

So there are our Favourite 5 picks for this month! But if you're watching your wallet this month, do not fret! Check out FriedChilliesTV's 'Making Scones' video on the Learning Kitchen Channel , that will have you whipping up delicious scones at home in no time. And remember, a great Afternoon Tea is best when shared!
