The heatwave has gotten on everyone's nerves, but hey, chill and enjoy some cool icy desserts that will give you relief. Local desserts, ice creams and even bingsu, we got it all. It is time to go on a ice cold food trip!

Cool Down With These Cool Places

The heatwave that hit Malaysia recently has got everyone sweating and parched. People are cowering inside buildings and refusing to leave their air conditioners. Being a foodie and self-proclaimed optimist, I tried to look for the silver lining behind this heat, and it clicked, ice cream! And not just ice cream, we have all sorts of shapes and sizes of icy desserts in this blessed country. Hurray!

ABC and Cendol

Let's start with the local favorite ABC and one of the best place to get it is none other than Fradoo ABC Special in Shah Alam. On top of a generous heap of ice shavings is a garnish of grape and lychee, a scoop of ice cream, and drizzles of chocolate sauce and syrup.

Location: Stall No 14, Medan Selera Seksyen 2, Seksyen 2, 40000 Shah Alam

If you want something less of a flavour bomb, get yourselves a bowl of cendol. There are numerous cendol stalls, retaurants, trucks littered across Klang Valley alone, but our favourites is Haji Shariff's Cendol in Seremban. The shaved ice is drowned in santan and the gula dominating this cold delight will quench your thirst. What makes this place special is that they still use metal bowls, (this helps to spread the coolness evenly throughout the bowl) keeping it colder for longer!

Location: 44, Jalan Yam Tuan, Bandar Seremban

Warung Cherry in Kg Baru serves ABC but they also do it in its older form namely ais kepal. Ais kepal is a shaved ice that is shaped into a ball, then it drenched in different syrups and then topped off with condensed milk. You can find them at Jalan Haji Hassan Salleh near Kg Baru LRT Station.

Ice Cream and Soft Serve

For ice cream, we couldn't get enough of Fat Baby Ice Cream which is located in SS15 Subang. The owner of the shop has such deep passion for ice cream that she bought her own ice cream machine and started making her own ice cream. She also opts for full cream and full fat milk in her ice cream as low fat is just not creamy enough. Try their Cornflakes ice cream, an ice cream infused with cornflakes that will surely bring back your childhood memories eating cereal while watching Saturday morning cartoons.

Location: 47, Jalan SS 15/4b, Ss 15, 47500 Subang Jaya

Another great option for homemade ice cream is Inside Scoop. All the ice cream here is very smooth and packed full of flavour. Other than your usual flavours, they also make great local inspired flavours like durian, chempedak, and teh tarik. Some other notable flavours are avocado and Salted Caramel Hazelnut. They change their line up every now and then, so do check their facebook for new flavours!

Location: No. 9, Jalan Telawi 3, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur

You can't go wrong with Softsrve Ice Cream and Dessert Bar. Soft serve is smoother and creamier ice cream. This is because air is folded into the ice cream mixture as it churns. There are a variety of flavours and toppings to choose from such as Cereal Vanilla Milk, Roasted Oolong Tea and Watermelon Sorbet!

Location: 31, Jalan SS 21/1a, Damansara Utama, 47400 Petaling Jaya

Bingsu is a popular Korean shaved ice dessert with sweet toppings such as fruits, syrup, and red beans. It is similar to our ABC and maybe that is why it is gaining a lot of traction lately. We tried some unique bingsu creations at Ow:l Espresso Cafe in Subang SS15, it is located opposite of Starbucks there. The bingsu features a huge cotton candy that is shaped into cute animals that covers the bingsu. Doesn't matter how old you are, we dare you not to feel just a little bit happier looking at a cotton candy animal.

Location: Jalan SS 15/8, Ss 15, 47500 Subang Jaya

There you have it! Some of the best icy desserts you can get in town. So venture out and beat the heat with some of them.
