Spontaneous Oscar Get-together

It's time again to salivate at dresses and jewelery. Make snide comments on who's looking run-down and appreciative noises at who's looking ravishing. So shake out your cocktails and bring on the dips... it's Oscar time!

Favourite 5

We know it’s always on Sunday night in the US so this means you will be watching the repeats on Monday night but what a good excuse to meet up! It might stave away those Monday blues just thinking about having a few friends over, eat good junk food and look at dresses and hear teary acceptance speeches.

Here’s 5 Favourite Snacks that you can munch on while watching the Oscars. *Oscars is on the 22nd of February night in US so this will be for a Monday night 23rd February in KL.

Popcorn- it’s an awards show about movies so obviously this is a must. It’s actually easier than you think to make popcorn from scratch.
Ingredients:
1 cup of corn kernels/ dried corn (this in the dried bean section)
2 tablespoons of butter
Some salt
Method:
Take a heavy saucepan put on medium high heat. Melt some of the butter adding a little bit of oil to keep it from burning
Put in half a cup of corn first (because it’s going to expand!)
Coat the kernels with the butter. Then cover it, when it starts popping shake the saucepan to make sure it pops evenly
Repeat with the rest
Add some salt and munch away!

Right, but seriously who can be bothered to make it from scratch after a hard day’s work? So alternatively, get yourself some microwavable popcorn (okay this might not be healthy for you but it’s only for a night) and let it rip! Alternatively you can always buy them ready made from places like Famous Amos but it's sweet and we like them buttery... Yes... lots of butter...

Dips- Make some nice dips or buy them from a store. Here’s a super easy humous you can make ASAP.
Ingredients:
1½ cup chickpeas
2 cloves of garlic (preferably roasted)
1½ tablespoons of lemon juice
2 tablespoons of tahini paste (optional- you can buy this from the supermarket)
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt to taste
Method:
Put all in food processor and blitz it! Before serving drizzle some olive oil on top and sprinkle some paprika for colour
For a variation, blister 1 red pepper on a fire. Peel off skin and blitz it with the rest of the ingredients
Serve with crusty bread, corn chips or some vegetable crudites

Steak Sandwich
- It’s nice to have something hearty to bite into. It need not be difficult. Get yourself some 2 inch sirloins, grill them on high heat for about 2 minutes each side and stick them in some bread with mustard. As Mr. Oliver says, you’ll be laughing. Check out how to make steak sandwiches here: Foodsters Kitchen: Steak Sandwich

"It's a good excuse to meet, have junk food and ogle at stars"

Fried Rice- Let’s face it, us Malaysians love our rice and this is an easy peasy fried rice to throw together.
Ingredients:
2 cups of cold rice
2 inches of belacan
2 cloves Garlic (minced)
2 Onions
Half a carrot
5 stalks of long green beans
3 chillis (the hotter the better)
Half a cup of shrimps/ chicken/ beef
1 egg
Salt and Pepper
2 tablespoons of oil
Method:
Mix the cold rice with belacan until even. Heat oil with medium heat
Sautee chopped shallots, minced onions and finely diced carrots in a wok
Toss in the rice and mix thoroughly
Toss in diced long beans, then meat/ seafood of choice
Add in one egg and stir the fried rice until egg and meats are cooked (about 5- 10 minutes). Add salt and pepper to taste
Tips:
Mix belacan or seasonings in the rice beforehand so it will be even. Even if it’s soya sauce or chili sauce. It's easier to distribute it before it goes in the wok.
Better to use basmathi rice. Normal rice can get too startchy and sticky
If you are too lazy to chop up beans and carrots, 1 cup of mix veggies will do the trick

Mock-ito
- You must have a refreshing, trendy drink to toast the Best Actors to. Champagne is really not the option here as it’s a working night and frankly a little too extravagant. But this is a simple and fresh drink maddeningly easy to make.
Ingredients:
Some Mint
Brown Sugar
Lime
Ginger Beer
Ice
Method:
Crush the mint with lime and some sugar
If you have a shaker and a muddler, all the better
If not you can pop it in a blender but don't blend it too long. You want the mint to be a bit rough
Pour this into a jug, add ice and ginger beer. If you have a shaker you can mix it "Cocktail" style
Tips:
You might need to do it a few times so you can adjust the sweetness and sourness of the Mock-ito
If you don't want to use ginger beer you can use soda water or sugarcane (omit sugar if you are using sugarcane)
For alcoholic option, just add rum!

While you are getting your snacks ready, you can watch all the stars arriving. Get the nominees and e-mail it to your friends before the oscars and ask them to bring it with their predictions. Remember tell them not to peek in the morning. Then sees who gets the most right. But really this is just an excuse to chill and gossip on a week night.
