The Bangsar Foodcrawl

by Ali Photography Friedchillies on Wed, September 20, 2017

Bangsar is is often seen as an a upscale neighbourhood where everything is a little on the expensive side. We found that besides some of the good cafes there are a lot of local food to be had here and some are really wallet friendly.

Bangsar's Best Kept Secrets

Bangsar is one of Kuala Lumpur's most popular nightlife districts, but not many people know that there are good eats around here as well and we don't mean them fancy restaurants. We're talking about the local grubs that we love to eat.

Start with Serimooka, which is located in the busy street of Jalan Telawi. Serimooka sells Malaysian kuih's for breakfast in a cafe-style enviroment. You can find kuih koci, kuih bingka ubi, kuih keria, kuih lapis, pulut panggang and many others here, and what better way to enjoy it with than with a nice hot cup of teh tarik.

Address: 46, Jalan Telawi, Bangsar Baru

There is also a few stalls near Masjid Saidina Abu Bakar that serves really good breakfast. Here you can find a more heftier and fulfilling breakfast such as nasi lemak, nasi berlauk, and even satay! Best part is all of these are reasonably cheap, a pack of nasi lemak will only cost you RM1.50.

Om Shakti Chello

We are not done with breakfast yet, oh no, head over to Jalan Ara Kiri 3 for some great Indian brunch at Om Shakti Chello. You can expect Thosai, Capati, Idli but our favorite has to be their Appam Gula Merah. The gula merah is added in while the appam is cooking to infuse it with nice rich and sweet taste. It's also a brilliant place for tea, their veggie karipaps are fried on the go and is crisp and fat with filling.

Kedai Kari Kepala Ikan Anuar

Now we know that most of the good eats in Malaysia is the roadside stalls, some don't even have a signboard. A few shops beside Om Shakti Chello is Kedai Kari Kepala Ikan Anuar, there is no signboard here, if you see a long line of people, you know you are there. The people line up for the good and consistent curry that they serve here and their cheap price. You can eat under RM10 here! (minus the kari kepala ikan).

You can find both Om Shakti Chello and Kari Kepala Ikan Anuar at Lorong Ara 3

Nasi Beringin

Nasi Beringin is one of our local dishes that not many people know about, it is named Nasi Beringin because it is akin to yearning. It seems that the rice is so good that once you eat it you will yearn and crave for it. The rice is cooked with spices and oil to make it really fragrant, and you can choose a few lauks to go with it. Our favorite is definitely their fried chicken, it is said that they sell tubfuls of chicken a day.

Ganga Cafe

Fancy yourselves for some northern Indian cuisine, then head over to Ganga Cafe. The food served here are all vegetarian, but worry not, it is absolutely delicious. Try out their chapati or their vegetarian Murtabak. Oder up a Thali if you are famished, brown rice is served with three vegetable dishes, 2 dhal, Rasam, Papaddam and salad. They also have an excellent Sunday buffet. Along the same row there are some good eateries too like Barat, Bakar, Bella and Baba Low (that's a lot of 'B's!). They serve everything from Mediterranean food to grills and Nyonya fare.

Address: 19, Lorong Kurau, Taman Bukit Pantai

Grind 22 & Wok It

Now what's a Bangsar guide without one of its cafes? Check out Grind 22 & Wok It. Grind 22 serves an array of coffee and desserts, meanwhile Wok It, which shares the same space serves up DIY Fried Finger Foods and chinese take-out fry ups. There is an open area covered with trees, perfect to hang out with family and friends. Try out the Nona Latte which is a coffee with a gula melaka twist. For cakes we love the Frozen Mango Cheesecake, its light, refreshing and absolutely delicious.

Address: 22, Lorong Maarof, Bangsar Park

Jaslyn Cakes

Jaslyn Cakes has made a name for themselves by serving delectable cakes. There are a lot of cakes and pastries to choose from such as carrot cake, chocolate peanut butter cake and many more! And that's not it, they also have pavlova and cookies as well.

Address: 7A, Jalan Telawi 2, Bangsar Baru

All in all Bangsar was a treat to spend a day just makan. Aside the pubs and bars, and the cafes, there are some gems that we found that is definitely is pleasing to the taste buds and wallet. For Dinner check out other Bangsar joints here like Station 21 for cheap and cheerful grills, Mikey's Pizza for NY-style pizza and KGB for burgers.
