Even if you are attached and romance is eminent, why not do something different this year? Afterall even hardcore Raya revelers run away for a holiday in Australia once in a while to avoid open house hysterics and nosey relatives. When you pare down special occasions and festivities, what's essentially left is that you get to spend it with the people you care about.
So this Valentine’s since it’s on a Saturday you can make a whole day of it. Here are our 5 Favourite things to do on Valentine’s starting from the early morning to the wee hours of the next morning. Best thing, you can totally include all those gorgeous people in your life.
I Heart You Breakfast
Prepare something special for your family. You don’t have to make it in bed. You find that most people don’t have the things to facilitate a breakie in bed like a small standing tray. Plus there’s all those crumbs you have to clean up afterwards. Instead have everyone in the kitchen pulling up chairs or throw a nice cloth on the dining table and serve them heart shaped eggs on toast. All you need to do is just buy heart shaped cookie cutters. You can also make heart pancakes drizzled with honey.
You can be a little corny here. Breakfast allows you that because everyone is fuzzy from sleep and just happy to have something nourishing to eat in the morning.
Shop with your Sisters
Or parents or brothers or friends. Yes malls are a hazard on weekends but there’s always someone in the family that adores shopping and why not brave it for a change out of love. Plus, since there’s always something new opening somewhere- try a new place because it means you get to try new restaurants.
Best way to cope with crowds and your siblings indecisions and contain that shoe fetish of yours is to stop often for refreshments. Do a Shopping Mall Foodcrawl. Grab a currypuff and mid-morning coffee before steering them to a nice lunch and then tea and cakes after at a café you always wanted to go to. And catch up.
Tea with Long Lost Friends
Yes… we all have them. Friends that somehow get neglected when your everyday life gets busy. Maybe it’s your clubbing gang that disbanded when the ring-leader had a baby. Maybe it’s some work colleagues from the previous company. Maybe it’s the kid you used to share comics with and had been living overseas for the past 3 years. Use this day for an excuse to call them up.
Most people would probably have dinner planned but are free for tea. Go somewhere nice and have scones or even a teh tarik at a favourite mamak. Make the effort and you might even find something new about your old friends.
"Chill. Let the day and mood take you to where you want to go"
Throw a Sexy Singles BBQ
So what if you’re single? Everyone loves a good grill-up, nice Hawaiian music in the background and watching the sun go down. This requires a bit of planning but generally Malaysians are a pretty casual lot. This is great opportunity for flirting as well as checking out who’s available. So call up your single friends and their single friends, crank up the barbie and buy some nice cuts of meat.
Invite those who are attached too if you like (they might have yummy single friends). A lot of people don’t really want to go to restaurants on Val’s day because it’s cut-throat rates and usually mediocre food so if you’re offering them fabulousness and fantastic food chances are you’re the hottest address in town.
Drinks with your Posse
Who really needs an excuse to go cocktailing with their girlies or carousing with their buddies? Everyone uses and abuses this day so why not you? Plea loneliness and guilt them out. If you loathe all that fakery surrounding Valentine’s, play valentine scrooge and do a Valentine Humbug Night Out. Gather all that hate it and toast your hatred together.
Catch up with girlfriends over cosmos. Shoot pool with your guys. Grab a movie at midnight. Dress up and meet friends at a new bar in town after your dinner for two. Be fluid. Worst thing you can do on Valentine’s is put pressure on yourself or your partner on unrealistic expectations.
If you just don’t feel like staying in, go out. If you don’t feel like going out, stay in. Sex is not going to be fabulous just because it’s Valentine’s or even guaranteed. Food is not going to taste better or your hair, if it frizzes is not going to behave just because it’s the 14th of February. So chill. Let the day and mood take you to where you want to go and have a ball with those who deserve your time.
