Top Curry Spots in Klang Valley
Malaysians, without a doubt loves their curry. That’s because it's available at almost any time of the day. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, tea, dinner and of course supper! And best of all, we have all three styles of curry here; Indian, Chinese and Malay!
Kari dan Malaysians berpisah tiada.
Personally, I haven’t met a Malaysian who doesn’t like curry and if ada pun, mesti tak pernah try a proper, betul-betul kaw, original curry-kari like how our aunties used to make! Seriously, someone who can make me a pot of kickass curry, I will marry! But for now, let’s not go there because I can’t marry Uncle Anuar - my number 1 curry fixer in Klang Valley. So here’s my go-to spots for great curry-kari fix that will leave your fingers smelling beautiful for days!
1. Kari Kepala Ikan Anuar
This place is basically my Kari default, especially during weekdays. You’ll see crowds of people lining up to either bungkus or makan straight away.
The Kari Kepala Ikan (Fish Head Curry) is the one you have to try. Starting at RM20 - which is legit cheap, it still makes me wonder why I can’t figure out why is their Kari Kepala Ikan so sedap and addictive... Is it in the fish they get fresh daily or maybe Uncle Anuar’s secret blend of spices. I don’t know but I’m sure once you get a taste of it, you’ll want it for the rest of your lives! That’s how good it is.
Address: No. 2, Lorong Ara Kiri 3 Lucky Garden Bangsar Kuala Lumpur

2. Bawah Pokok Indian Rice
This unnamed warung is mostly known as Bawah Pokok Indian Rice and their Kari is a trade family secret. Only two person knows the recipe and both Aunty Alagamma and her daughter makes em’ all fresh daily for their customers.

The Kari Ayam and Mutton Paratel (Dry Mutton Curry) gotta be on your list when you come here. if not memang melepas because it their curry is so rich, spicy and beautifully seasoned to make sure it goes well with the steaming hot rice they serve you with. It really feels like at home when eating here, tu yang makes it so best here.
Address: Kampung Attap, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur
Price: Starting from RM5
3. Vishal Food and Catering
Originally a small canteen for the workers of their print shop, word started to spread around about how sedap the food here was. This eventually led them to expand and made it open for the public.
They make all sorts of curry with their own blend of spices but what I love the most is their mean Salted Fish Kari! This special one is not served everyday, so ask them about it the next time you go there, perhaps its by request only. Oh they also have Rabbit Curry sometimes - if you’re up for it.
Address: 15, Jalan Scott, Off Jalan Tun Sambathan, 50470 Kuala Lumpur
Price: Starting from RM8
4. Lau Heong Seafood Restaurant
Have you had Chinese Kari before? If you haven’t then this place should be the one to pop your Kari cherry!

Hearty Fish Head Kari cooked in a claypot to give it that earthy tone. You can surely taste the freshness of the fish and it cooks very well in the claypot as it infused all the flavors together perfectly. Chinese curry is not too creamy and not too spicy, so I enjoy this the most if I’m craving for a light curry fix.
Address: Restoran Makanan Laut Lau Heong 43A, Jalan 3/48A, Sentul Perdana Bandar Baru Sentul, KL
Price: Starting from RM25
5. Kari Kepala Ikan E&O
If you love curry as much as I do, then gotta head down to E&O and try their Kari Kepala Ikan! It has been around since the early 90’s and they are famous for this signature curry that is really kaw and loaded with okra.

Just make sure you bring enough friends to share it with as the portion can be overwhelming but totally worth it. If I’m eating on my own, for sure tapau back home cause I’m not wasting a single drop of this spicy, and pack with a punch #KKI!

6. Warung Pak Hassan
Rice is not the only thing you makan your Kari with kan? When you go to Warung Pak Hassan, line up, grab a plate of Roti Canai and get a load of this - free flow Kari Kaki Ayam! If you’re a fan of Chicken Feet, you will enjoy this place very much.
He makes the Kari Kaki Ayam fresh daily every morning. It usually runs out by noon, so you should come here in the wee morning so you’ll get it hot off the pot. The curry here is...unique. I would describe it as “in between a thick Indian curry and a light Chinese curry”. It’s just perfect the way it is, and it’s so good with his Roti Canai! This one is a must try.

7. Ratha Raub Uptown
Ratha Raub is no stranger to the Kari Kepala Ikan game, especially in Raub, Pahang. But they have decided to grace us KLites with their glorious Kari and who loves it more than anyone? Me!

The place can be a bit full during lunch and dinner rush hour so try to avoid it if you really want to take your time to savour into their special blend of spices. It’s really hard for me to describe their curry, but the level of spicy-ness is just so so good. It’s creamy, the fish is always fresh and when you our it a plate of hot steamy rice… it just feels somewhat magical. The aroma and taste will linger in your brains forever almost! I love it here, so Raub is a must try!
