Actually, I am quite nervous about the awards. So many I don't knows. I don't know what the outcome will be. I don't know what people think. I don't know whether the winners and nominee's appreciate what we are doing for them. I don't know whether the many Malaysian food bloggers approve the nominations. I don't know whether would it be a success. But I what I know is that it's high time somebody does something like this. Reward people who has been giving us great food for decades. If it is not us, then who else? So we just jumped in the water, started swimming and hoped that there is land on the other side.

We emailed everyone we know to ask for nominations. It took us awhile to sort that out. Some places were so popular with the different categories that we had to make a rule that only one restaurant is allowed per category. Some categories like crabs were very top heavy. Many people nominated for about three places only. Wow, I bet these three places are making tons of money. Looks like they have a captured market. From there, we could already guess who is probably gonna win. Normally,…  Continue reading »

Pigeon Never Tasted This Good

In glorious Aswan, the sweetest town on the Nile route lies a little piece of food epiphany. Oh there are many wonderful things to do in Aswan, languidly take a felucca and sail with no direction in mind.

This is one of the most relaxing things you can do in Aswan. I want one. Now. With a river of milk and honey flowing behind my house.

Go to a Nubian Village and take pictures with a sleepy crocodile. Take a horse carriage to the souk and haggle over the famed Aswan gold. Sit on the verandah of the Old Cataract Hotel where Agatha Christie wrote part of 'Death on the Nile' and sip mint tea.

Upper Nile is gorgeous with a contrast of colours. Here the reeds are green and lush growing just underneath the ocher sands, under the blue, blue sky. So many things to do and be wowed by.

Two Hour Roast Turkey 101

Can you really roast a turkey under 2 hours and still get it to be perfectly juicy, moist, succulent and tender? If you've just spent RM140 bucks for a bird and it's sitting in the freezer your answer should be .... Yes, you can my friends! After the BBQ Turkey Skunkworks yielded a juicy turkey, we got comments from our readers doing "Damn! That turkey looks good but I don't have a BBQ set". Well, never fear, remember the 6 sen turkey I got earlier? Looks like I have a spare turkey to play with. So I'm gonna share with you a simple weekend roasting project. And mind you.. this is the first time I'm doing this, normally Aida (our Chef-In-Residence) roasts turkeys for us. So for the newbies about there, I'm with you! This is a simple no stuffing, no frills turkey recipe. The idea is to get you to roast a perfectly juicy, moist, tender, delicious and succulent…  Continue reading »

The Cheapest Turkey in the World!

OK so.. here's a funny story. Honey REALLY wanted to try barbequing a turkey after hearing someone telling her how juicy and succulent it can be. She actually spent a whole week researching on this singular topic alone in the office. So, one fine day late November, we all went to Cold Storage in Bangsar to buy some turkeys. There were loads of them sitting quietly in the freezers. She picked one up ... "Hmmm.... this one is RM150 bucks" she says. "That one is is bigger but I don't like the shape" she says again. And then she said "Oh... dude.. look... that one is 6 cents only".

"What?!" I yelped. "Lemme see.... uh huh... you right, man. I think they made a mistake or something. Lets just put this back then". And that was that. Huns picked up two turkeys, grabbed a couple of other turkey related stuff and headed for the checkout counter.…  Continue reading »

Of Burritos and Bins

I've taken to leaving extra food on top of rubbish cans. It's for the hobos and the hungry vagrants. In the US portions of food can be well... huge. And I am well... greedy. My friend Sarah with her sweet logic says, "they usually dig inside the can, this way they can just pick it up and eat." In America (even in healthy California where portions are modestly gargantuan), I can hardly finish anything. So I leave a trail of burrito and sandwiches on top of rubbish cans making sure I wrap them carefully so that the bird and insects don't land on it and hope someone hungry gets to eat it.

Anyway... I took a lovely picture of a tasty turkey sandwich on top of one of their green recycle bins but alas! After my great Mac mishap last week, my hard drive croaked so you just have to imagine it. What I can tell you about is the burritos. You got to have one of the burritos in San Fran. It's a thing to have. This is what natives come back for the moment they touch down at the airport. The Mexican-American burrito of San Fran was born and bred in the Mission District somewhere in the 1960s and…  Continue reading »

Romli on the Rooftop

Now here's a bit of a surreal experience. Here I am at the largest rooftop bar I've ever seen smack in the middle of Manhattan. I am surrounded by the trendy set, women in cocktail dresses so short, they have to precariously perch or risk showing their see you next Tuesday. There are investment types, stag party types and those who are suckers for the spectacular views on the rooftop.

Now the thing about rooftop bars is that it toes the line at tacky. It's a bit of a showboat and usually sells overpriced drinks. However what's interesting here is that they serve Malaysian sliders called Romli burger. We kid you not! It's actually inspired by our own street-side Ramlis except here they stuff it between potato buns and have a beef-lard combo on the patties. The lard is to ensure that the patties stay moist. Oookay... not exactly kosher.

Foodsters’ in New York!

New York in October is almost blinding. The sky is Faberge blue with hardly a cloud and weather crisp enough to take a bite out of.

We went to film Malaysian restaurants in the Big Apple. Slogging through the fuzz of jet-lag, the long subways rides from Queens to Manhattan and people in a hurry we still managed some time to visit Saveur’s awesome office, catch up with friends old and new and a pit stop at Katz Deli and Magnolia Bakery.
