Romli on the Rooftop

Makan Musings

Now here's a bit of a surreal experience. Here I am at the largest rooftop bar I've ever seen smack in the middle of Manhattan. I am surrounded by the trendy set, women in cocktail dresses so short, they have to precariously perch or risk showing their see you next Tuesday. There are investment types, stag party types and those who are suckers for the spectacular views on the rooftop.

Now the thing about rooftop bars is that it toes the line at tacky. It's a bit of a showboat and usually sells overpriced drinks. However what's interesting here is that they serve Malaysian sliders called Romli burger. We kid you not! It's actually inspired by our own street-side Ramlis except here they stuff it between potato buns and have a beef-lard combo on the patties. The lard is to ensure that the patties stay moist. Oookay... not exactly kosher.

A groupie-nerd moment at Saveur

Encounters

It’s hard not to act like a groupie. Okay maybe more of a groupie-nerd. I mean we are in a magazine office and trying to click pictures. Trying not to have cheesy grins plastered over our faces. Trying to be all professional and cool. But seriously entering Saveur- well it's a trip highlight. Their office is just the right size with a huge kitchen area where recipes are tested on a daily basis. There’s even a small cubicle at the side where the Kitchen Director sits (the ultimate cubicle).

When we talked to James Oseland (the editor-in-chief) someone popped in with slices of Upside-down Pineapple Cake. Omygawd- awesome Upside-Down-Pineapple Cake. The I-will-sell-my-granny-for-another-slice Upside-down Pineapple Cake. They've been testing this recipe that day. After the third time I sighed eating the cake, James smiled and said, "I know, it's good isn't it? Even for us who test recipes everyday".

When Honey met Salami

"What? Can't go to New York and not go the Katz!"

Think of the homemade salami, the melt-on-your-tongue pastrami, matzo ball soup, tender brisket and stacked Reubens. Okay we admit, first time we tried to find it, we got lost. It was at night, Soho was distracting and we hadn't slept for 30 hours. Then second time we got mesmerized by Whole Foods and forgot our main intentions. And finally, third time's the charm.

Katz is not only one of the oldest delis in Manhattan (since 1888, yesiree) it was immortalised in ‘When Harry met Sally’ (yes the one with the faux orgasm). They even have a sign pointing "Where Harry met Sally- hope you have what she had". Safe to say, Katz Deli is an icon. But it’s not only Katz that gives you the shiver of familiarity. The thing about New York is how iconic it is. There are so many movies and TV shows shot here that walking anywhere is like déjà vu.

Even stumbling in a combined 27-hour…  Continue reading »

Foodsters’ in New York!

Makan Musings

New York in October is almost blinding. The sky is Faberge blue with hardly a cloud and weather crisp enough to take a bite out of.

We went to film Malaysian restaurants in the Big Apple. Slogging through the fuzz of jet-lag, the long subways rides from Queens to Manhattan and people in a hurry we still managed some time to visit Saveur’s awesome office, catch up with friends old and new and a pit stop at Katz Deli and Magnolia Bakery.

The New FriedChillies Website

by The Foodster, on Wed, October 01, 2008 - 8:07:41 PM, 1 comment

Hello there! Come on in! If you've not already noticed, FriedChillies has a spanking new website. We hope that you like it. Its about time anyway. We have added a few more features to the new site.

Firstly, the kopitiam forum is way better than what we used to have. Its now wayyyy better and more intuitive.

Secondly, the search button works! *really* There's one for Reviews and one for Kopitiam (bottom left corner). FYI, we've juiced up the Kopitiam search.

Thirdly, we have integrated FriedChillies.TV into FriedChillies.Com so that you don't have to open up a new browser just to view our videos.

Fourth, We got much bigger pictures of food to make you hungrier

Fifth, FriedChillies now looks more like an online food magazine instead of a blog. For those whom've been with us for 10 years know that we were never a food blog, but we were not a magazine either. Now we are. That also means that ...
