Nasi Lemak Kangkung FAM
Don't discount new hero Kak Zainab as a small time street peddler. She used to work at Mandarin Oriental, MAS Catering & did a short stint at Equatorial Hotel before her love of nasi lemak got her in our Top 20 list. She is famous for her kangkung sauteed with sliced onions. Her rice has a quadruple stage cooking process. Definitely light and healthy.

We also welcome three returning heroes...
Mak Jah's with her homemade tasting nasi lemak and goes delicious with their killer Perak inflected rendang and sambal sotong.

Ujang Nasi Lemak, where the rice is given the utmost respect with a soak and steam cooking method that gives you serious flavour and texture and of course the sambal kerang.
Nasi Lemak Ujang Corner, No 26 Jln2/16 Dataran Templer Bandar Baru Selayang

And for Kak Hani, head straight for her ridiculously delicious ayam masak merah flavoured with kaffir lime leaves. Apa lagi? (what else?!!)

Fauzey char frying Nasi Lemak

Nasi Lemak Kukus Goreng Fauzey
One fine day, one of Fauzey's customers suggested that he fries the nasi lemak. Weird? Yup, but he complied and never looked back since. He had to tweak the sambal in his 'fried' nasi lemak as normal nasi lemak sambal is sweet and lacks punch. After his tweak, his goreng version is definitely kick a*ss and that landed him in our Top 20 for 2014. Served with juicy and tender Ayam Berempah.
Fauzey, Behind the old bus stand, PJ Old Town, Section 3, PJ

Restoran Sayur Sayuran Ruyi
You can swear that their 'ada kick giler' sambal nasi lemak has belacan but nope they don't. Vegetarian Ruyi's owner is such a fan of nasi lemak that he perfected one of the best vegetarian nasi lemaks in town that even meat lovers can consider (sometimes). Mushroom stalk is used for the ikan bilis and the chilli is very spicy.

Greenlicious
Go organic with Greenlicious. Don't say that we are not fair at FriedChillies. This is an organic nasi lemak. The judges were intrigued how can you turn brown rice, pandan extract, lemongrass, then coconut rice. Rendang tempe with labu, extra virgin coconut oil and pandan into an organic version on NL that is tasty. They did it so their are IN our 20.

Nasi Lemak Royal(e)
For most KLites, they(we) will be confused. Royal is the famous nasi lemak from Alor Setar. This is the one where the nasi lemak is more towards nasi minyak and the lauks are more slanted towards the nasi kandar types with daging hitam, kari kambing and more. But who's to say that this is not nasi lemak? They have been selling since the 50's. Confused? Come try them out and see for yourselves.

Nasi Lemak Ali Sri Weld

Nasi Lemak Ali, Penang
Queue's for Penang's Nasi Lemak Ali starts from 7am and does not stop until their nasi lemak runs out. Sometimes 3pm, sometimes 4pm. Ali sells simple nasi lemak bungkus but with a twist. Customers can pick from 6 different varieties of lauk from sambal ikan bilis, sambal sotong, ikan papan, prawns, chicken and ikan kering. Simple done well.

Outstation Category

Restoran Nayan, Lenggeng, NS
Restoran Nayan is a vortex. When he opens to sell his nasi lemak sambal ikan keli in Lenggeng, other places will be ..err.. empty. Just a simple nasi lemak bungkus with a piece of ikan keli in sambal but people drive for miles just to get this and go home. he's definitely got the mojo.
Restoran Nayan, Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan

Restoran Joyz, Lenggeng, NS
How About sambal pucuk paku or gulai telur itik (duck's eggs) with that nasi lemak bungkus? Uh huh.. Fresh pucuk paku, ikan bilis with a nice heat and telur itik (duck eggs) gulai to go with that. Flavourful and a great combo.
Restoran Joyz, Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan

Restoran Seri Mesra, Port Dickson
Simple is hard to do well. So when we tasted a simple nasi lemak bungkus from Mesra, we were blown away at how something so simple can be so good. Owner Zie says that its her mothers "air tangan". Perhaps its also the sea water nearby that makes it taste so good but Zie it keeping mum about it. It's a secret.

Institutions need no introduction so this year's returning heroes are...
RA Nasi Lemak with their 'killer' paru goreng, Suri Nasi Lemak Panas with their hot version of nasi lemak bungkus with a mind boggling array of lauks to cure your midnight cravings and of course Tanglin Nasi Lemak which is on its way to being passed down to their 4th Generation. Transitions can get tricky. Hope that they can still keep the sambal limpa, rendang ayam & sambal sotong just like Zainal's used to make. But this year, they are still in our list.

R.A. Nasi Lemak, 15A Jalan Raja Abdullah, Chow Kit, 50300 Kuala Lumpur
Suri Nasi Lemak Panas, Food Court Jalan 223, PJ

Nasi Lemak Jalan Alor

Nasi Lemak Jalan Alor
Do you know that there is an awesome Nasi Lemak vendor at the start of Jalan Alor? Around for 32 years? That's because Aznal's stall whilst opens at 7am, runs out sometimes as early as 8am! Most times 10am. The Ayam Rendang Padang and sambal sotong are the BOMB! Yes... their lauks have an Indonesian slant and its thigh slappingly delicious!
Pavement at entrance of Jalan Alor, KL.

Nasi Lemak BK4

Nasi Lemak BK4
Nasi Lemak Bungkus BK4 started in 2008 and have been quietly selling their packs around Puchong area. Regulars swears by their 'kampung' taste which has a smoky aroma and sweet dark sambal. Hajar slow cooks the sambal for 8 hours & adds in grarau (krill) in the sambal for that extra kick.
