Makan Musings

When it comes to favourite 'makan' places, we Malaysians are really spoiled for choice. Food is a favourite topic in our everyday conversations and one of the most common greeting is " Dah makan?" ( Have you eaten? ) so if you want to know which eateries always get our fans buzzing, check out our list of top 5 reviews in 2012.

1. Kak Laily Nasi Ayam Original, Subang Jaya

One of Kak Laily's trusted sellers and her rows of chicken ready for customers

It's no surprise that chicken rice holds the No. 1 spot on our list. We loove chicken, not only because it's tasty but also due to its affordability and availability. That's why chicken rice is often the preferred lunch choice for the majority of Malaysians. One of the most popular halal 'kai fan' joints in the Klang Valley, Kak Laily Nasi Ayam Original have been serving plates of delicious chicken rice to her loyal customers for more than 30 years now. You can taste the chicken stock in her rice, it's so flavourful and goes perfectly with her succulently plump roast chicken.

We suspect that the chicken is boiled and then fried in a huge wok to give it the nice distinctive Laily flavour. Her chicken have crisp golden skin that hides the moist juicy flesh within. To give them the extra oomph factor, they drizzle light soya sauce over the chicken pieces. They use almost every part of the chicken at Kak Laily's, so if you like living one the wild side, order the fried liver and gizzards to go with your chicken. Even the feet don't go to waste. You can request for it and it comes in the soup that accompanies your chicken rice.

The Square Food Court, SS15 Subang Jaya, Temporarily moved to nearby makeshift stall until renovations are completed

2. Blue Boy Restaurant, KL

Blue Boy have a huge chap fan spread during lunchtime daily

A vegetarian restaurant made the list? Now, this was something we never expected but then Blue Boy is not any run-of-the-mill veggie joint. Often mistaken for a rather unsavoury establishment with a similar name, Blue Boy is in a league of its own when it comes to their selection of meatless dishes. Aside from having a large chap fan spread during lunchtime they also have offer a fully vegetarian Nasi Lemak, Char Kuey Teow, Mee Jawa, Yong Tau Foo, Prawn Mee, Lam Mee, Curry Laksa and even Assam Laksa. Even though these hawker favourites are devoid of meat, they score huge points in the taste department that even the fussiest carnivore can enjoy them without any complaints. We definitely recommend their fishless Assam Laksa ( mind boggling how they managed to make it taste so authentic ) and their Char Kway Teow, so expertly cooked with tons of 'wok hei' flavour and generous amounts of oyster mushrooms to give it a heftier feel.

No 6001, Blue Boy Mansion, Jalan Tong Shin, Kuala Lumpur

3. Toowomba Meats and Deli, Setapak

Succulent cuts of steak cooked exactly to your preference Toowoomba Meats and Deli.

From totally no meat to a place that specialises in meat, this list seems to cover all the bases! 3rd on our list is Toowomba Meats and Deli. Essentially a butcher/steakhouse, Toowoomba offers a selection of steaks, mainly strip loin and rib-eye, which come in three varieties: grass-fed (the cheapest), grain-fed (middle-ground) and Wagyu (for the minted!). Their steaks come to your table sporting grill marks and are so wonderfully tender that the meat yields easily with a cut of the knife. Along with beef, they also sell lamb cuts. Their lamb racks are also a great choice because they have plenty of fat that caramelizes well on the grill. So yummy that you will gnaw it clean off the bone. If you love all things meaty, head over to Toowoomba for a satisfying meal.

G3A, PV128 Platinum Mondrian, Jalan Genting Klang, 53300 Setapak

4. Nasi Lemak Marvellous, Ampang

At Marvellous, the nasi lemak packets are tiny in stature but big on taste.

Nasi Lemak Marvellous is well known for their cute packets of nasi lemak. Rule of thumb is 2 packs per person and you eat them on their own or with the lauks they sell alongside the rice. The packets of nasi lemak here are reminiscent of the ones you had at your school canteen. Mild and mellow sambal with coconut infused rice, the tiny packets are perfect tummy fillers and not too overwhelming especially when the nasi lemak craving strikes. What also sets Marvellous apart from their competitors are their impressive lauks. Whether it's their sweet and tangy ayam masak merah or their dendeng- rendang hybrid lauk simply known as the 'Daging Bantai Jer', the lauks here have a wholesome home-cooked feel to them. These homely dishes are the reason why their cute packets of nasi lemak are sold out every night.

23-G, Jalan Medan Indah 2, 68000 Ampang. ( opposite the Bukit Indah Police Station )

5. Kaw Kaw Burger Bakar, Wangsa Maju & Puchong

The bestseller at Kaw Kaw is the 'Baconizer'.

2012 was a year when the 'burgar bakar' craze was at its height. And the leader of the pack was undeniably Burger Bakar Kaw Kaw. One of the fattest street burgers around, each patty at Kaw Kaw weighs in at 175 gm. The bestseller here is the 'Baconizer'.A slice of cheese sandwiched between two fat beef patties then topped with cream cheese sauce and a strip of beef bacon. You know that your heart starts to clog as soon as you take a bite but it's so freakin' good that you can't resist it. For adventurous eaters who fancy doing their own version of 'Man Vs Food', you can order the ultimate 'Tower Burger' which has 20 beef patties garnished with beef bacon and cheese retailing at RM 150!

Burger Bakar Kaw Kaw ( Wangsa Maju ), Jalan 4/27a, Wangsa Maju Section 2, 53300 Kuala Lumpur Burger Bakar Kaw Kaw ( Puchong ), Lokas Makana Food Court, No 15A, Jalan PU 13/2, Taman Puchong Utama, 47140, Puchong, Selangor

I remember those days. Used to be under a big tree. I still preferred the big tree location rather than the sterile food court tho.
