Origins of the Foodster
This website is the foodster’s guide to food. This means it is made,
reviewed and arranged by normal people like you and me. By normal, we mean we
haven’t gone to the school of cordon bléu, we are not trained to
criticise like food intellectuals and we doubt any of our words would carry
any weight in the high echelons of trained food connoisseurs.
We simply love to eat.
We have all been brought up in families whose social life revolves around eating.
We all have stood on tippy toes, watching our grannies pound chillies to put
into a hot curry; we have sneaked out with our fathers to nearby coffeeshops
eating fat bread toasted on charcoal with kaya. We have begged our mothers for
loose change so we can run after the ‘man on the motorbike’ so we
can stuff our faces silly with ais krim potong, green cream buns and spun sugar.
We’ve bribed siblings with promises of sweets and sat under storm drains
with our honchos munching one thing or another.
The tradition of eating is in our blood.
And we now gather in our own social groups usually congregating in one eating
place or another, to catch up, to talk shop; sign contracts even. Food is universal,
you can talk to anyone about food, it bridges gaps, it breaks the ice and it
has been witness to many romantic moments. We have made more lifelong friends
through the love of food than we have through any other medium.
Most of us have suffered from indigestion at some point by eating too much
and too fast. That is a mark of a true foodster. In fact, we count many kopitiam
owners and restaurant people as our closest buddies since they have been witness
to many of our life’s triumphs and sorrows. Want to celebrate? Let’s
go makan. Want to drown your tears? Let’s get some food therapy. And we
pass it on to our children. We don’t scrutinize food under a magnifying
glass and tell you what’s wrong with it.
But we can certainly tell you what’s right with it.
This website is made possible by a bunch of people who are united in passion.
The passion for food and the passion to share it with as many people as possible.
We hope you enjoy eating it as much as we enjoy dishing it out to you.
