Chicken. Rice. Overload. While I tried to space out my scouting extravaganza for the best chicken rice, my plan didn’t quite pan out very well. Squeezing in five chicken rice lunches in one week was, by far, not a good idea. But I did it without any hiccups (pun intended). Now I know what some of you might be thinking chicken rice is chicken rice is chicken rice! There are in fact a few factors which determine a good serving of chicken rice. Here's my favourite 5 Chinese Chicken Rice in the Klang Valley...
Restaurant Satellite Ipoh Chicken Rice
I was told that this was the real McCoy of chicken rice if you want simple and homely. The humble atmosphere of the old restaurant gives the assumption that the food here is cheap. Well it’s not, but it’s not insanely expensive either.

The old fashion style chicken rice here is tasty yet understated. I ordered the basics – steamed chicken, chicken liver, the essential rice and the signature bean sprouts. The chicken was smooth and chewy and I felt the seasoning for bean sprouts was nice and savoury. It was obvious that Restaurant Satellite still managed to pull its regulars into chowing down there during lunch. It is in fact located just next door to its competitor – New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice. While many tend to gravitate to the modern, air-conditioned-fitted counter part next door, I thought it was only right to give the underdog a chance.

The bill: RM9 – which included the chicken rice, side order of bean sprouts and a 100 Plus drink.
Restaurant Loke Yun Ampang
In 2007, Guang Ming Daily gave Phang Kee Kim, the owner of Loke Yun, the “King of Hainanese Chicken Rice” award. Noted for the good food and excellent service, finding this place was unfortunately a challenge.

It’s true about the friendly service though. I was greeted with a smile from Mr Phang himself, armed with a meat cleaver and cleverly chopping up the chicken to dish up for his customers. Phang’s father opened the restaurant in Pekan Ampang in 1971 and until today, the older generation brings their children to eat here. An order of steamed chicken, chicken liver and soup was placed. I must say the chicken rice here is delicious, especially their chili sauce. It had the perfect blend of chilies, garlic and ginger. You can choose the regular chicken or village free-range chicken. Smooth and succulent, I must say it was well worth the trip from PJ.

"Chicken. Rice. Overload. "
Restaurant Yat Yeh Hing
Two down, three to go. How much better can chicken rice get? Well, Kee Kee Bentong Chicken Rice is famous for its corn-fed chickens. If you live in PJ and surrounding areas and haven’t heard of Yat Yeh Hing, you need to try this.

The place was busting at the seams on a Saturday afternoon. Again, I missed my chance of savouring any roasted chicken as they had ran out. Brisk business would be an understatement. So I settled for steamed chicken and bean sprouts. The line for the soup was so long I couldn’t wait. The chicken here has a slight yellow tinge (more yellow than normal chickens) and the pinkish hue of the meat makes for a juicy and succulent bite. They were generous with the huge portion of bean sprouts though. One of the interesting dishes here is the Glass Chicken Feet – which I have yet to try. Maybe next time I will be more adventurous.

Nam Heong Restaurant (The Esquire Kitchen)
Everyone knows you get a real work out while walking from one end to the other at Megamall. Don’t I know it as I walked and walked to find this restaurant. Nam Heong and Esquire Kitchen fall under the same management so they have many outlets within Klang Valley.

This is one place where it is considered “refined” to entertain guests and important clients. The very essence of Nam Heong is a traditional, age-old recipe for chicken rice perfected over 70 years. My order for today was the roasted chicken, rice as well as the chicken feet and bean soup. The chicken was roasted to a perfect caramelized texture. The soup had a nutty and wholesome flavour to it and it was very filling. In addition, Nam Heong also offers a wide repertoire of dishes, which include Roast Chicken, BBQ Pork, Crispy Roast Pork, Healthy Herbal Soups and the popular Asam Fish-best sellers.
G024, North Court, Mid Valley Megamall
The bill: RM18.85, which included the chicken, rice, soup (the most expensive item in my bill) and a soya bean drink plus service tax. Needless to day, this was the most expensive chicken rice lunch I’ve ever had.
New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice, PJ
My last chicken rice review and possibly for a very long time. So I made my way back to Jalan Gasing to this place located next door to Restaurant Satellite. This place is rather huge and you can dine inside which has air-conditioning or al-fresco watching the traffic go by. Incepted in PJ from Ipoh in 1977, New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice occupies four shop lots with seating arrangements on both levels. The restaurant is very clean and the staff is friendly and efficient no less. The waiters even use a PDA to take your orders which connects wirelessly to the kitchen.

I ordered the roasted chicken and rice as well as the bean sprouts. They have other items on the menu too such as pork dishes and meatball soups. The chicken was nonetheless juicy and tender. The chili sauce? Lovely! This is a good place to swing by during your lunch hour if you’re near the neighbourhood.
