Fancy some sambal belacan but just can't be bothered to make any? Well there are plenty of eateries out there with great sambal belacan. However, shop sambal belacan is a little different than homemade of course. And sometimes it doesn't have too be mind-blowingly hot. Top 3 requirements for great eatery sambal belacan is 1) Must complement the dishes there. 2) Must be tasty... we don't like places that do hot for heat sake, needs to make sense to the tastebuds. 3) Must have kick!
Restoran A. Hassan @ USJ 10/1
A. Hassan is famous for their ayam kampung goreng. Some places serving ayam kampung don't know how to treat it hence there's too much chew without juice. Here it's tasty and still pretty succulent. Make sure you ask for the fresh ones at the back. Also there's loads of lauks to choose from but what superbly complements it is the sambal belacan. Just thinking about it is enough to make you salivate. It’s toe-curlingly good with some serious ummph, hot to the roots of your hair but so tasty you can't...stop...eating...it. Best of all is that they squeeze quite a bit of lime juice into it so It’s also got a refreshing bite. As my friend says, "terangkat bila makan." We liked it so much we usually ‘tapau’ some of it home.
Restoran Kolam Air @ Jalan Ipoh
This place serves simple Chinese cooking and there's no real menu. Usually you just sit down and let them know what you fancy eating in terms of meat and carb. They have tasty Cantonese kuey teow bihun. Best thing of course is their nice pot of sambal belacan that sits on every table. The chillies are blended but still with texture and has a savoury flavour with a hint of saltiness that is addictive. It's so tasty that you can just have it on its own with plain rice.

Restoran Hatinie @ Jalan Selendang, Shah Alam
Usually we are here bright-eyed and bushy tailed for their Ramadhan buffets since they usually clean out by 6pm. On regular days they have an array of dishes with all kinds of strange ulams you rarely see like jering and terung rembang. Of course they have sambal belacan with kick to eat all that ulam with that is ju Some placeshave too much of a heavy hand on belacan, here it's just right and not dry and clumpy.
Ayam Penyet Ria @ Sunway Mentari
This is the Indonesian version of sambal belacan- a sambal made with serious chilli power and terasi as the Indonesians call it, their name for belacan. Some of these Indonesian restaurants really have HOT sambal belacan. We like this particular franchise of the now infamous ayam penyet because their sambal is lovely. With hot rice, fried chicken and a large squirt of their kecap manis to balance out the chilli heat- it's awesome.
Champs @ Centrepoint, Bandar Utama
The sambal belacan here is a classic and is nice and thick. It goes really well with all the local dishes on offer like the prawn noodles, hokkien mee and the abundance of porkified dishes like tau eu bak (soy sauce pork). Slobber...
