Chocolate Lounges

Makan Musings

Chocolate lounges. That seems to be the in thing now. Something different to the food scene no doubt, but the idea of a place with a whole menu of different items made with chocolate sounds like a meal that screams sugar high while I'm more of a savoury kinda person Unimpressed as I was, I decided to try it out.

The Theobroma Lounge has a lot of publicity so I headed over to the branch in One Utama. They have two others, one in Bangsar and another in Pavillion. No doubt, the layout of this café was very well thought out. It’s warm and comforting, like hot chocolate on a rainy day. The dessert and chocolate display would have the average chocolate lover drooling. I ordered two drinks, a walnut brownie, and a quiche to see if they are good in the savoury department. The drinks were “ The Princess of Iceland” and the “Queen Of Rock And Roll”. Yeah, they do give their blended drinks laughable names like that. For the quiche, I went for the Quiche Lorraine.

The drinks at first tasted really good. The “Princess of Iceland” was a dark chocolate drink while the “Queen Of Rock and Roll” was chocolate blended ice cream.

The ‘Princess’ was dark, chocolaty and thick, while the ‘Queen’ was milky, heavy and packed with enough sugar to cause an instant cavity.

The walnut brownie was exceptionally good

I did feel though that the walnuts should have been toasted before being baked into the brownie batter. Other than that, it was slightly crisp on the outside but moist and a little gooey on the inside. There was also gooey chocolate icing on the top. Then came the Quiche Lorraine.

I was looking forward to trying it out as the waiter told me it was their savoury specialty. What a disappointment.

One bite was all it took for me to decide that this Quiche Lorraine was a high-class version of a murtabak!

There was chicken and mushroom, but nothing in it tasted like cheese. The shortbread at the bottom felt like Al-Dente pasta not to mention that the mushrooms tasted like it was cooked in alkaline. Phew! I could not bring myself to finish that dish.

After eating too much sweet food, my brain felt like it was shutting down. There were warning bells screaming diabetes! Its was just too much too handle. In case you don’t believe me, two other friends felt the exact same way. There was just too much chocolate in our system.

The walk back to the car was terribly slow and lazy. I could barely concentrate. That was it for me. I vowed never to go back there again, unless there ever come a day when I need to ‘tapau’ a walnut brownie.
