Sunshine Chicken Farm

Encounters

It was a wet and misty morning as we drove up to meet up with the other bloggers for a little road trip to a free-range chicken farm. I was excited to see what happy chickens looked like…and I also was interested to see the whole process of raising a chicken in a healthy manner.

These days we hardly know where our food comes from…meat is bought in neat little packages and we haven’t a clue how the meat is treated before landing in that Styrofoam container. Therefore going to an actual farm intrigued me.

Cock-a-doodle-doo! A happy handsome chicken indeed

We arrived in Kuala Lipis and then had to switch from our car into a 4-wheel drive just to make it safely through the slippery mud filled slopes. This ride made me feel like an adventurer, roaming out into the wild slipping and sliding all over the path as the rain trickled down. To be honest it was a bit scary too as it always felt like the car wasn’t really gripping the road. After the 10minute thrill ride into the wilderness we finally we made it to the farm. The cars were sprayed with an antibacterial solution, which I’m assuming is to protect the chickens from anything the car might have picked up along the way.

At the Sunshine Chicken Farm the chickens are free-range and castrated chickens (Capon Roosters or Yim Kai) are also available. Here the chickens are slaughtered at 120-140days. They get to live their lives out well eating grains and running about the grassy plains. The fresh air and clean water is the perfect environment for them.

A rooster going through the castration process...only takes a couple of minutes in this expert's hands

The Capon Roosters are a specialty as their meat is more tender and full of flavour. The castration process happens when the chickens are 8weeks old. It is relatively painless and is done within minutes. With the lack of testosterone these chickens grow larger (up to 6kg in weight) and their meat is sweeter. They are also less aggressive on the farm living a happy and full life.

They are left to roam freely around the farm

The regular chickens we buy at the grocery store are usually pumped with antibiotics and hormones and are ready to slaughter after 36days. Speeding up this process not only makes the chicken meat tasteless, but it’s also not healthy with all the added chemicals.

Sunshine Chicken Farm supplies their chicken to a few different restaurants and grocery stores in the KL and Selangor area. They also do home delivery! Check out their website to get a full list on where you can get this chicken.
