I have to agree, some of these nasi lemak places are a bit overrated.. I actually found my best nasi lemak at a small stall in TTDI (in front of cake sense bakery. This is the TTDI side near the old IBM- now VADS- building) They sell nasi lemak kukus with a variety of lauk.

The fried chicken and rendang are great, the sambal is not too watery, just right and spicy and sweet and the rice is always piping hot.

The best thing is that they don't skimp on the condiments and it's very good value for money.

They open around 8pm.

Give em a try! lets give a chance to these great small nasi lemak places who don't do as well as the well-known ones, but who serve up much better nasi lemak because they don't have the "reputation" to back them up.

Now I am hungry, i might go get some nasi lemak after this! smile

You know I'm all for the local people to expand and bring their business international. Tapi this nasi lemak antarabangsa franchise is just a hit and miss la. I've been to their outlet in Telawi twice now and once at the one opposite Ampang Puteri (btw someone point me in the right direction for a good nasi lemak place in Ampang area just in case my preggo wife decides to have a hankering for it again... I heard off one near Ampang Point but I can't find it anywhere).

I must tell you this. The nasi is ok la... quite standard nasi lemak on the good side of the scale. The sambal is where I think it goes awry. The standard sambal is passable, but way too much sugar and I believe its just at the bitter end of the scale. But the sambal sotong is a definite no no. I believe they've dumped a bucket load of ajinomoto in there as well, but seriously eating this can give you a heartburn.

The rendang ayam and daging are just too dry and out of sorts. Do also give the mee kari a huge miss. I guess I'm a bit harsh there la. I suppose mee kari the malay style is not suited to my taste bud. But the kari is way to thick and brownish. I prefer mee kari Johor style or penang style. Lighter orangy colour and easier on the taste buds.

I seriously feel that this chain is going down soon. If only they can buck up and do a lot of quality control at least in this first few years to get the brand name going.

With the AFA results out, Ill have to try the Village Park nasi lemak now. By happy coincidence, 5 of the AFA winners (Village Park's Nasi Lemak, Yut Kee kopitiam, Raju's Roti Chanai, Kanna Curry House and Fatty Crab) are featured in the March issue of Timeout KL that I happen to have lying around. The magazine also featured Restoran Sate Kajang Haji Samuri but it featured the Kajang branch instead of the Taman Melati branch so Im discounting it on technical grounds.

Yah I know. They did a top 40. Anyway, I heard a rumour that the Satay Samuri branch in Taman Melawati is good so that's why we went there. It's true. Better than some of the other branches surprisingly. We were there coz our 'spy' team thought that Samuri's son was going to be there. But he was delayed as he had a long meeting so we had to give the awards to the manager instead. Show must go on lah!

I am staying in Seri Petaling area since yr 2000 and have been frequenting the nasi lemak opposite pizza hut as mentioned by yfyap. However, i find that the quality has deteriorated in the last few years.

Now i find my nasi lemak at a pakcik's stall in front of IMU near Vista Komanwel B condo and his nasi lemak is superb! if i am not mistaken he has another 'branch' in seri petaling area (at the end of the road of The Store at the t-junction.

This pakcik starts selling at about 7:45 am and his nasi lemak normally finishes at about 9 am. Must try for anyone staying near the area. I think he doesnt sell on mondays. he is around on weekends but its fast selling!

Finally had the Village Park Nasi Lemak for lunch today. The place was packed but it had the vibe of a chinese coffee shop. People were eating and leaving very quickly whch is a blessing in a weekday lunch place. From the Rasa Rasa website, I understand that the owner is a muslim chinese from Singapore so maybe that's why its got a faster paced vibe. I had the nasi lemak sotong with a side order of ayam goreng. The rices was nice and fluffy but the smbal was pretty sweet. Ditto the the sambal sotong. The Ayam goreng though was wonderfully fresh and juicy. I dont think that I would call it the best nasi lemak in Klang Valley (which would put it high in the running best nasi lemak world wide) in of itself but because of the overall muhibbah vibe of the place, its definitely worth being in the list. A couple of doors down from Village Park is a O Papa Cafe which is the local branch of the 1A curry puffs from Singapore. They are pretty good and juicy and what I usually look for to quell my curry puff cravings if I happen to be visiting Takashimaya, Singapore.

Btw, with regard to the AFA results checklist, I also went to Fatty Crab with my folks for a Sunday dinner. While I thought the food was good, my folks felt the sauce wasnt as great as they recall.

Try the Bandar Tun Razak foodcourt. You know the one that you come out of kesas and turn left into by the main road. Its opposite a malay supermarket and next to this housing estate for ex military people.

The pau and kuey teow and satay there are very good as well.

I just had my fave Seapark NL but it seems to be off the mark. Either it was a bad day or standard went down. Going to try Jalan 222 NL that someone told me about. The quest continues!

Surprised that nobody mentioned the Bangsar nasi lemak so far... goes by many different names so I don't know what to put down. A few names I've heard from friends are:

- Nasi Lemak Lee/Li (owner I guess?)
- Nasi Lemak Rainbow (reference to the Rainbow burger stall they used to next to in mid 90s)
- Nasi Lemak Chandu (reference to how the nasi lemak is like a drug? :D)

The sambal is slightly sweet but the main reason I still go back there after almost 20 years is the ayam rempah. They were previously located right next to the pondok polis in Bangsar Baru (after the mamak street closed down), and now are the corner shop in Green Giant about 10m away.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, opens from about 6pm to 4am.

Some also call it "nasi lemak ganja". That is a very famous stall and while I do think that the Bangsar stall kicked off the nasi lemak ayam goreng trend in KL, its been surpassed by many other versions including the one at Village Park. It was never really that great to begin with. The rice was always a bit soggy and the sambal wasnt very good but for a relatively cheap and superfast meal after or before a night of drinking and partying, it certainly hit the spot. Now that Bangsar no longer has that kind of nightlife, you dont have the crowd to ensure that the chicken you get was done frying only seconds ago.

My mum has been buying the nasi lemak from outside MGS school near the national mosque for years. It's open in the morning, and as far as I recall it's still pretty good. Haven't had it in a while, but will look for it soon and report back.

The only famous Nasi Lemak I can think of within the vicinity of the national mosque is the Tanglin Nasi Lemak which is available both in the mornings as well as the evenings.

igothis: wuuu, nasi lemak near the MGS school. Sounds interesting. Izzit a mobile stall?
asian-malaysian : tanglin suprisingly still have good nasi lemak. but that is just my personal opinion. Their nasi lemak is more refined now. I noticed that not only is the lauk compatible with the nasi lemak & sambal but all the lauks are compatible with one another. Hard to do.

Will have to revisit the place then. Do you join the morning queue or did you go for the evening edition? To be fair, they always had a comparatively light hand in spicing their sauces which may help. I used to enjoy the light beef curry lauk with the nasi lemak even if I didnt think much of the beef itself. I share your views on the difficulty in finding compatible lauks for nasi lemak.Nowadays Im getting more and more fussed about the sutability of toppings on my burger and nasi lemak. Its a big change from my youth when more was...well..more. Rather than ruin a good nasi lemak with mediocre toppings, Id rather go kosong these days or stick to dry stuff like fried chicken.

asian-malaysian : Uh, didn't know that Tanglin has an evening edition. Normally I go for the mornings. If late, the queue is about 20-30 people long. Melampau man! Oso, now rather hard to get the breakfast nasi lemak bungkus with just spicy sweet sambal, half an egg, crispy anchovies cutely wrapped in a banana leaf and paper.
