RE: Mee Penang Al-Syed
F17, Upper Floor, Medan Makan Sunway, Bandar Sunway
Bandar Sunway
Selangor
Dear Foodster,
Today I went to Sunway in search of the above mee rebus featured on this website only to find that the stall is no longer there (though to be fair, the mee jawa was note worthy). Anyone have any idea idea where the mee rebus stall might have moved to?

Craaap!!! they are closed? Sorry. They may have another stall at Sunway Piramid food courts. But anyway, there is another place at the old town market called Mee Rebus Sharif. It's located near the food court beside the market. Open in the mornings. Serve good mee rebus since 1960's.

Thanks, babe_kl. Will defiantely check it out some time. Still, from the pictures on your blog, it looks to me like the kl mee rebus (the style that my mum says she had in Leboh Ampang in the sixties). It has its virtues. Not quite a Johor mee rebus but loads better than a singapore mee rebus. Another good example is the one behind Yut Kee's. Still, in my humble opinion, its not quite a penang mee rebus which sometimes feels like a mythical thing to look for in the klang valley.

There is also the Mee Baidali at Plaza Damas, at Uncle Don's . Not as good as the ones in Johor but ok.

I quite like the version they do on the weekend with the lamb shank on Saturday but then again the Johor mee rebus has never been my first choice. Penang mee rebus (particularly the version served in Bangkok Lane) has always been a fierce and enduring passion in my family. My dad has been known to carry his own bottle of fried shallots and even tah pauing the sotong from a different mamak shop to achieve a bearable substitute when outside Penang.
Theres a pretty good mee jawa in Kepong that was featured in the latest edition of Flavours magazine. Its in the row behind the famous Tuck Kee Restaurant. Dropped by the place last Sunday afternoon and the road side stall was still full of people many of which were tah pauing in quantity. It was pretty good but no where near as good as the one served by the lady in the same coffeeshop as the McAlister Road char kway teow in Penang.

Ok, just got back from trying it. Yes, it is the bangkok lane mee rebus but the sauce was a bit on the thick side and a bit too salty and sour. Because its a 24 mamak place, I think the sauce was made early in the morning and now its just too thick. The bangkok lane mee goreng was spot on though.

For those people that still remember that a decade ago there were an auntie who sells mee rebus in front of her house whereby sometimes we need to queue up for more than an hour just to buy the mee rebus.
Unfortunately that the auntie had passed away few years ago. Since then I never found any mee rebus that taste better or same like it.
Luckily, right now her daugther had started to sell the mee rebus and the taste is almost the same. She sell the mee rebus at the food court opposite IMBI Pasar Rakyat. The price is RM4.00 per plate and they are closed on Saturday and public holiday. Their business hour is 8.30am until 4pm.

Went to Penang for the Jazz festival so I had a chance to sample the Bangkok lane mee goreng and mee rebus in its original setting and glory. It was around 8.30 on a Sunday morning but the old man already had many orders for the noodles. The mee rebus was as wondeful as I recall though the sauce was slightly sweetish and perhaps not as evolved as it could have been with a few more hours of simmering due to the early hour we were having it. I also thought the old man lacked a bit of vigour this time round in frying the noodles. For those who dont know, the cook here is famous for turning his wok many times over highheat as he fries each individual plate. This time, he only turned it only once when frying our plate. The sotong, the likes of which is rarely sampled in KL, was as good as ever.

Its in Taman Danau Desa. Im not so good at directions but its basicly 5 minutes off the Federal Highway (around the mega-mall area).
Its around the same shoplot area as the italian restaurant Paradiso that was reveiwed by the Foodster here:

Will try to find you the exact address but will have to hunt down my Flavours magazine. If anyone out there can help rajahanim, please do so. I would advice you to go in the morning as it was.

..much better the second time I had it on a Sunday morning. If you like fish head noodles, there is also a very famous very crowded place selling it in the same area.

I am also a desperate fan of the original Bangkok Lane mee rebus in PG. So I rushed over to Tmn Danau Desa for lunch. Yep its an off shot of the PG shop - more specifically the brother's. He used to have a shop in SS3 PJ. The fried mee is good. 8/10. But the mee rebus was spoiled by too much lime. But the Bangkok lane distinctive taste is there. Not bad. 6/10. KL's yellow mee contains too much boric acid and this is reflected in the after taste. If the water used for blanching the mee is not changed frequently, the residue of boric acid will definitely add to the boric acid inherent in the mee. The address is Restoran Shauiy, 7, Jln 5/109, Plaza Danau 2, Tmn Danau Desa. Its in the middle with a large yellow signboard, Across the road is a Watson store.

I just had my first bangkok lane mee rebus sampling of 2009 over the weekend attending an old friend's wedding dinner. I stayed at the G Hotel on Gurney Drive which afforded a convenient 5 minute walk from comfortable bed to culinary bliss. My first mee rebus was in the afternoon. One of Mahbub's assistants was making a mess of the mee goreng cooking what looked like 5 plates at ago! Of the old man, there was no sight at all! Had he retired leaving the business in less capable hands? The mee rebus was thankfully as good as ever though I felt the sauce was slightly too concentrated. The first thing next morning at 8am, I tottered back to the coffee shop with some effort having had a bare 3 hours sleep after the previous evening's festivities. A tad extreme some might say but I was a pilgrim on hallowed ground. Di mana mee rebus di masak di situ langit ku junjung. I was well rewarded with the sight of old man Mahbub (he didnt retire after all!) standing there in full form and glory frying those wonderful noodles with the required wok hei and wok spinning action. If I had the fire of youth on my side, I would have ordered a plate of the fried noodles to complete the experience but I could only manage one dish that morning and for me a mee rebus order was non-negotiable. The mee rebus sauce was light, bright and lively with all the flavours having room to bloom in the not too concentrated sauce. A world of difference from the previous day's experience. Most surprising of all, it was even something of a hang-over cure! My view now is that morning (well perhaps a little later in the morning) is the best time to sample the wonderful bangkok lane mee rebus and the only time you should enjoy the famous bangkok lane mee goreng in all its glory.

I had intended to have a second sampling of the psedo penang mee rebus in the Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa on Telawi Tiga on Sunday only to be told that it was "sold out" although I suspect they just didnt cook it that day). This was a bitter blow as I was quite eager to see how a side serving of their sambal sotong would have gone with it and even went to the trouble of bringing my own bottle of deep fried shallots (a component sorely missing when I last tried it).
Instead, I sampled the mee rebus tulang @ Chawan further down the street on the corner of Telawi Tiga. It was a johor style mee rebus somewhat like the famous mee rebus baidali @ Warung Aji-Don in Plaza Damas. It was a huge bowl serving with a thick spicy and meaty gravy containing lots of tasty lamb meat practically falling off the huge bone that came with the noodles. This was not a dish that was cooked in a hurry. It came topped with a fair bit of deep fried shallots and chopped chillies already but a little more never hurt so my bottle came to good use after all. While part of me says it is not quite as good as mee baidali, it was certainly a very good effort and certainly the best one is likely to find in the Bangsar vicinity.

Huh? I din't know they had mee rebus tulang at Chawan. They seem to be quite a little gem of a surprise. Last time, I had coffee there, I saw them serve pulut kuning with some chicken rendang.

Its not served in the morning which sort of makes sense- aside from the heartiness of the meal, it must take all morning to simmer those meaty bones down to tender perfection. Its better to go for it in the afternoon or the evening. Yes, they do serve the pulut kuning with rendang in the morning menu along with their nasi lemak and both dishes are very good (in my view, their nasi lemak easily trumps their more famous new neighbour nasi lemak antarabangsa by a country mile in terms of both nasi and sambal).

p.s. good job on efficiency. first post at 1am and by 11am you already reported back

Um, which place are you refering to? If its the Taman Desa place (since your quoting my post about that), ford gave the address and some description in his earlier post above. They also have a website that has a map of their location.
http://shauiya.com/location.html
As mentioned in my earlier post above, if you can find the Italian restaurant Paradiso, its just around the corner. Its about as close as youre going to get in KL-especially the sotong. Its been a while since Ive had been there (went back to Penang last month for two more sittings of the original stuff) and I cant recall if they were stingy on the fried shallots but bring some just in case- and ask for less noodles so that you can savour the sauce.
If you mean the one in Bangsar, it is on the row of shoplots directly alongside the Bangsar Village 2 shopping mall. Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa is practically next to Baskin Robbins and Chawan is right on the corner end of the same row of shops (the end closest to the Bangsar Village 1 shopping mall). You cant miss either.
ps-And it's not because I was efficient or hungry, and it's not because it was November. I rushed there that morning because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with the best Penang mee rebus in KL, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.

i found one really good plus value for money Chinese style Mee Jawa in Jalan Segambut Selatan. for RM3.80 (small portion) you get loads of ingredients covering the noodles. the stall is at the front entrance of Kedai Kopi dan Makanan Hoi Kee. its a stone throw from Yu Ai Seafood Noodles.
