Anthony Bourdain any day. I may not eat his cooking, but i like his easy going manner any day. Now that guy's a foodie.
Keith, omg... how old is the guy anyway? I'm just always expecting him to keel over any second when he goes around excitedly about something.
Marky...we are waiting for your reviews...
Babekl. aiyoo, if only you got to take him around. You'll be famous on tv man! I think he had this middle age lady to take him around and cook him stuff. At least that episode was palatable to me la. She was really into her rendang. With kebaya some more... typical nyonya style!

I saw Hakm's home made burgers van at the roadside this morning on the way to work. I'll stake it out until it opens and then we'll have that burger review!

The best street burger I have eaten was Jackson Burger on Jalan 14/29, Petaling Jaya. They got their reputation when they used to have two stalls one near the lake in PJ and the other at the food stalls which used to be where the Novotel opposite Wisma Cosway is. All the expats used to eat Jackson's burger and it did a roaring business. There's a lot of people that say The OM Burger opposite Naan Corner in Ampang Jaya is very good but have not got around to trying it. The difference between these burgers and gourmet burgers lies in the quality of the meat. In a gourmet burger you should be able to taste the quality of the meat. The best I have had in KL is Hakka Republic who serve two types of burger- one is pure Black Angus and the other is a blend of Black Angus and Wagyu. I prefer the Black Angus.
Prime and Tony Roma's also do a good burger but the Hakka Boyz have the edge. The Grand Millenium used to do a good burger but alas the focus on using quality meat is not there. If anyone can tell me where to find a burger that uses Prime quality US beef then that's the one to go for.

Ok here we go! I managed to swing by Hakm's home made burger after the gym last night and here's my take on it:
I ordered a burger kambing special cheese. Almost everything about the setup seemed to indicate that it was a typical Ramly.
The patty "looked" like it was a Ramly's patty, but somehow the texture looked more like real meat when it was cooking.
The vegetables were the usual cucumber, tomato and onion. They looked (and tasted) fresh and were finely sliced to give the burger an easier bite.
The buns were thicker but not the dry tough type. It was sweet and fluffy, a great pallette for the strong flavors of mutton and cheese.
First the mutton patty was cooked in what looked like mayonaisse instead of margerine, with splashes of pepper and worceister sauce. When that was done, the egg was spread thinly over the pan, and wrapped the mutton patty and cheese. Before sealing the package, a little bit of mustard is slathered onto the mutton patty. Sauces were not overflowing from the burger, just the way I like it. I requested no additional mayonaisse on my burger. The burger is then put in a polystyrene box, which helps it not get squished when taking it home to eat (usually a problem for me because I usually have a gym bag and work bag to carry upstairs with a burger in hand).
When I finally got home with the burger, it was still fresh and hot. The bite was tender - the soft bun made it possible to bite through the burger without having its entire slippery contents (eggs + sauce = burger lube) slipping out through the opposite end. The mutton tasted tender and soft. I liked it that way, though some may prefer their meat chunkier with more bite.
The finely sliced fresh vegetables lends a zingy crunch to it without getting in the way of the soft bite. Just juicy enough, without too much overflow.
In conclusion, definitely worth a bite at RM5.

My God Marky... you're killing me here. At 5bucks its not more than 1 buck away from most Ramli stalls.
Argh I need burger now...

William's got burger????? Now that's a first I've heard of. Oh boy oh boy oh boy! Are they any good? Ramly-esque (and with their reputation, it's probably a 5-patty combo with eggs and what nots) or Premie (ala Chilli's with fries and all)?
Salivating already!!!
Marcky - 14 April 2009 11:21 AM Best premium burgers I've tried (in order of preference):
1. William's near old Lim Kok Wing Kelana Jaya (try the beef pastrami burger or mozerella beef burger)
2. Tony Roma's Sunway Pyramid (somehow the branch at the Curve is sub-par, went there twice, both fail)
3. Zuup at One Utama
I don't really eat roadside burgers much.

Val, closer to Chilli's than Ramly for sure. They have varieties like mozzerella cheese and pastrami beef (the pastrami is INSIDE the patty!).
Rather pricey, my friend paid for mine during the last visit. Had a huge dollop of mash with creamy white sauce, the burger itself was pretty big too. RM25.
So far, my fave burger is in Tony Roma's (Cineleisure branch no good, have a go at Sunway Pyramid branch). I've not actually tried Chilli's burger, but I will when the opportunity comes.
All in all, William's burger is fabulous, although the price is on par with a proper restaurant with air-con (the most expensive burger at Tony Roma's is RM22.50++, with one side). I think William's burger might be a tad bigger but not by far.
To sum up, I think worth to try all William's has to offer but may be more worth to eat at a restaurant on a more regular basis.

Ooo... salivating!!! Thanks for the info. Will definitely give William's a try though I concur with you that it is more than what one would have paid at TGIF, Chillis, etc... I have not tried the burger at Tony Roma's; any good? What would you suggest? For Chilli's, they have the classic old-timer - good ole burger and fries -> nice thick slab of meat patty which is a bit dry for my liking. Only about RM15 (I think). I usually go for the Mushroom Swiss and ask for the meat not to be too cooked. Comes out beautifully... Mmm... I believe Chilli's burgers are mostly under 20.

Try the blue cheese burger. I also recommend whatever burgers you end up eating, that you finish with the avalanche. By far my favourite brownie and ice cream combo at a diner.

My personal fave at Tony Roma's would be the one with the mushroom (similar to BK's mushroom swiss), but I don't recall what the actual name is. There's only one with mushroom on the menu. It boils down to preference, they are all similar with variations only on the additional toppings.
I think TehBeng's suggestion would be my next try - I love to strong flavor and aroma of blue cheese, although not everyone will respond positively to blue cheese.
Also, Chilli's will be tried soon, since it's not expensive. I must personally taste it, gauge it, and rank it.

Oh, so basically margerine that hasn't been hydrogenized yet. Still better than margerine I guess. Would probably taste better with real butter. Yum...

Shortening is a nicer word for vegetable fat. Same thing, one with a scary name and another which is a friendly name meant to make it sound like you're not eating white death.

Williams does have good burgers - tho the ambiance is certainly "enchanced" with the longkang and rats scuttling by.
For roadside stall burgers, I like the one at Ampang Jaya, outside the 7e. Messy to eat, just like a burger should be.
Carls Jr is nice too

Has anyone tried the resurfaced reinvented Relish burger yet?
asian-malaysian - 21 February 2009 09:13 PM I read in the Star today about Relish reopening at Zouk. Heres the news clip:
http://thestar.com.my/lifestyle/story.asp?file=/2009/2/21/lifeliving/3235454&sec=lifeliving
Has anyone here tried it out yet?

AHHHH! I WANT ALSO!
Incidentally, Hakm's Home Made Burgers now opens for lunch opposite Subway in Kelana Jaya SS6 (directly opposite my office). Had a go at the beef-special-cheese @ RM4.20 and it was superb. Anyone wanting to try can now try it for lunch!
Enjoy!

eksk: According to Azim, they use new zealand beef for the burgers. Bud sadly, I seldom see Azim when I am at Rasta anymore. The grill is now taken over by his non-malaysian assistants. Still gud, but I think if he is at the grill it will taste better.

I was at Hakm's stall again last night and I noticed that at the bottom of the menu there was a Las Vacas sticker, which possibly indicates that they are affiliated. That is, Hakm's home made patties are actually from Las Vacas (probably same owner(s)).

Adly: Yup read about it and it shows when eating it... Yeah started eating at Azim when Rasta was at the old place. Back then used to see Azim manning the stalll now at the new place i have yet to catch him in action
On an off tangent, i know fast food burger may be heresy for a lot of people here but i just cannot resist having Carls Jr whenever i am in the vicinity of one. The grill burger is just so awesome that i cannot go back to eating Mcd, Burger King. Even Wendy has to bow down to Carls Jr

Youre not alone, Adly. If the product had been a coney dog, the forum's whole "umum" rating would have gone out the window. In fact, the censorship board would have save it for themselves.

Went down to Singapore over the weekend and have to say the burgers in Chillis there are much better than those served in the KL branches. The issue of real bacon toppings aside, the USDA beef that goes into the pattie really shows through in rich juicy goodness. Chillis KL (and many other similar chains) has a tendency towards dryness by comparison. Off topic, even their chilli con carne was better and less diluted than in KL. To say nothing of those gorgeous baby back ribs. Yummmmm!

Howdy all, I'm really glad I found this forum and like all of you, I'm a big fan of burgers. Being a restaurant owner has given me the opportunity to share my passion with everyone in Malaysia.
At Frontera Bar & Grill we set out to create what we thought was the best burger we could, a burger that would be fitting for Frontera which is after all a Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurant.
Our creation was the Chili Cheese Burger and I would love to invite all of you to come and try it and let me know what you think.
The Chili Cheese burger at Frontera comes with seasoned skin-on fries and jalapeno coleslaw and sells for just RM19.95+
Come on over to Frontera at Jaya One and mention you read this here and will give you a 10% discount just for trying the burger and letting us know what you think.
I ask just one thing in return... if it is one of the best burgers that you have ever had then please tell all your friends.
Sincerely,
Larry

Larry : Actually, we don't *allow* ads on the kopitiam but since you are offering discounts, we let this pass. But dude, 10% only ah? Our minimum is about 25% off to make it worthwhile for the kopitiammers to try out. Now that's a discount. Larry.. ok?

Adly, Very sorry, it really wasn't meant to be an ad per se, like I said, I'm a big fan of good burgers myself.
With regards to a bigger discount .... I might be able to arrange that, but there would be conditions of course. The condition would be that if this is one of the best burgers you have ever had in your entire life then you must agree to tell ALL your friends.
As the administrator here I'm betting you have quite a lot of friends
Come on by Frontera and ask for me when you come. Make sure you have an appetite and I'll get you fixed up.
Larry

That's not what I had I mind dude. I would probably come incongnito and pay for the burger. What I meant was a bigger discount for readers in this forum.

Larry, I'm a big burger fan and have a lot of sway on my friends when it comes to dining options. Hope you'll entice me and the other readers with that 25% discount. If it really is as good as I think it is, you'll be seeing me and many of my friends dropping by pretty often. Make it happen for us and we can make it happen for you! :D

OMG...I am dying for a burger now after reading this thread!!! I am an absolute burger fanatic and love it in every shape and size...street burgers...premium restaurant burgers...homemade burgers...you name it! I love it!
One place that I realised was not mentioned is Fogal in Plaza Damas...they have wonderful patties that are uber juicy...that's one of my favs for sure! I'm also curious to try out Meatworks that apparently has a whole list of different types of burgers...mmm...I think I need to go for a burger tonight!

Marky, Meatworks is opposite the Cold Storage Supermarket in Solaris(SoHo). Plaza Dasmas is just above the Hartmas Shopping Centre. Both are in the Sri Hartamas area and can be easily found. Btw, there was a great article in the New York Times about the Perfect Burger that you might be interested in to hone your burger tasting skills or (if nothing else) to build up an appetite. ;p

Marcky - haha...yes it's "chef" and "inspiration"...or even "aspiration" for those who aspire to cook like chefs...but definitely NOT perspiration :-D
I was able to satisfy my burger craving last night...checked out Frontera after what Larry posted...and it was really good! Great value for money...and the chilli con carne gives it that extra savoury kick...oh it was pure meaty goodness!
Next up I gotta check out Meatworks

I tried the chili cheese burger at Frontera this evening. Although I DID promise to tell everyone that it's the best (because it is), I'm not doing this just to live up to a promise. Spent some time chit chatting with the man behind the burger, Mr. Larry Martin, and it's obvious he doesn't compromise on his food. Prices are very fair and food is excellent.
The chili is consistent enough in texture that it STAYS on the burger as you bite in, but not too thick that it feels too heavy. The beef is done just nicely. Larry prefers it without tomatoes but I like my tomatoes very much and stacked them up with the burger and bit down on them. Surprisingly, the burger stayed intact as I bit through it.
Also, you MUST try the key lime pie it's the best thing on the menu (I love my burgers but the key lime pie blew me away).
Definitely will come back for the great food AND the friendly experience!
