I am not the type who would pay too much for good food. So for me, best steaks reasonably priced 100g pieces are at American Chillies, the meats are Australian halal air flown. I also find the meat grills at Roadhouse Grill quite nice - spacious parking area. At Roadhouse Grill I usually order their Nachos for starters, much cheaper than Nachos at American Chillies. Give it a try. from what I learn in food documentaries, the best steaks served are Argentinian style and there is one in KL Gaucho Grill, Jln Rj Chulan. Argentinian steaks come from cows fed with quality feeds. Of course if you are into the real thing and dont mind paying, go for Kobe beef piece.

Since money is not a factor, Id suggest the Prime at Le Meridian hotel as reviewed by our very own Foodster:

I have a preference towards La Suisse at Plaza Damansara. Great value for the money Angus steaks. Only problem would be the place is not decked out lavishly or romantically, hence it may not be appropriate if you want a romantic dinner date.
Prime has a very nice atmosphere but do remember you will be paying a lot!

There's also Angus Steakhouse in Pavillion, recently reviewed by masakmasak, Maredos Steakhouse near KLCC (Jln P Ramlee) and Gaucho Grill at Chulan Square. Maredos is good but I know a lot of locals don't really get the taste. But I like. Gaucho grill surprisingly enough, I haven't tried. Perhaps will go soon.
If the company is paying, well then Prime is a great place. Mind you a dinner for four can easily cost up to RM800 bucks (and this is without drinks). For an adventure you can try the argentinian steaks vs the us corn fed vs the japan beef. They taste different. Argentinian ones are more flavourful. Do try the prime ribs as well. Have a great time!

Just had the best steak for a long time at place called Cuisine Studio, I think at Tropicana Golf Club. Run by French chefs who also runs workshops there and elsewhere, steak was Austrailian corn-fed, chilled not frozen, about RM80. Place not lavish, also sells stuff e.g. bread, foi gras, cheeses, etc with kitchen area for classes other side but good for those who likes eating. Also a lovely beef cheek stew.

Hey, boo, I had the fillet steak at La suisse yesterday. Its pretty good but the red wine sauce wasnt quite there and veg was said. They really need to do something about the ventilation because the place gets a bit smokey smelling from the cooking in the kitchen and its not very comfortable. My favourites there are the chef salad that comes with loads of sauteed mushrooms and the crepe with hot cherry sauce and vanilla ice cream for dessert.

I think they still do. As I recall, the thing about chilis is that they wont seat you unless your whole party is there and they'll only hold your table for about 15 minutes..

Might be wrong but I think they dont accept reservations dude. They have a first come first served policy on all their franchises.

Madre tried the black angus and argentinian steaks. The expense is indeed a 'company belanja' event. Glad that you had a great time.

For pretty good steak and really cheap... try one of the Decanter Branches, at 67G, Jln Setiabakti, Bkt Damansara. Only at RM28! It comes with potato and veggies in pretty square plate. Looks like hotel cuisine! Nice thick steak. If you are familiar with the other Decanter branches, they do not serve the same steak so just head to this branch. Also very yummy is the banana crepe for dessert.

Had Jakes Charbroiled steakhouse in Medan Damansara last night. Its still a good steakhouse but the price feels a bit steep. I was particularly annoyed that they charged me for the bombay sauce but it really is quite tasty. I set in a corner with pictures of past visitors/diners which included pictures Mahathir & family, Badawi & family and Annuar Ibrahim & family. How time flies by!

Somehow, I havent been particularly impressed with the newer chain steakhouses that seem to be knock offs of Victoria Station which I never particularly liked in the first place (IMHO, its just a step up from the Ship) but then again Im kind of old fasioned. I had a frightening experience in Maredos Bangsar where a rib-eye that came out as literally the toughest peice of meat I have ever eaten. I had to hack away at it so hard the table was shaking. I think the main change has been that it is now relatively easy to get perfectly cooked prime quality steaks in restaurants that arent steakhouses compared to the eighties so the general appeal of a dedicated steakhouse has somewhat dimmed. This has caused the newer steakhouses to feel the need to throw all kinds of things on to their menu that have no place in a steakhouse menu to attract customers unlike Jakes that has a loyal following. Angus Steakhouse seems more of a Yoshoku experience than a good old fasioned steakhouse so I quite enjoy it but I wouldnt compare it to Jake's.

Depends on the steak. I think the cheapest is a 200gm aust sirloin for about RM48. The thing is you can ask for a bit more (they may nudge you in that direction) so you know its not all pre-cut which is nice. On most weekdays, the potatoe is baked but on fridays and weekends they will serve potatoe wedges unless you make it clear you want the baked potatoes. For the starters, try the oxtail soup or nachos(particularly good). A great main course is their grilled spare ribs which has a fantastic marinade. If you order a steak, like I mentioned above, their bombay sauce (which they serve on the side) is so good you'll want a side order of garlic bread to dip it with. The ambiance is so relaxed and rustic that the end bill can be something of a shock if youre not prepared but otherwise you shouldnt be disappointed.

Yup Jake's does have some good steaks. As for Prime, it is still the steakhouse to go to. If I am not mistaken Maredos , Gauchos are they all from the same group? The steaks aren't so great in my opinion. Another tip I learned from Prime (after chatting with the chef).... It is better to order the black angus beef rather than its Wagyu... why? Prime Wagyu runs on grain grading... with the best balance between fat and meat should run at grain 6 or 7. THat should easily cost u about RM210 for a 6 oz steak whilst it cost u only RM150 for a 6 oz Black Angus Steak (Argentinian), which is of equivelant value to the Wagyu and qulaity too.....

That is very interesting. There is a difference between how people like their steaks in Malaysia I noticed. You either like them marinated in sauces and grilled (Jakes) OR have the cut plain (Prime/Maredos) with very light seasoning. Malaysians seem to like them with the sauces whilst Westerners seem to like them plain.

The Foodster brough up an important fact. I think if the steak is served plain, you have to use really good steak cuts. If not it will show. If you marinade it, or spice it up then you can get away with lower quality cuts as the spices will mask the quality. I think that is why you see a lot of hardcore steak lovers have their steaks plain.

Yup, but it is a matter of preference. As for me, sometimes it depends on my mood. If I like to sit down and enjoy a good piece of steak, I'd normally go for a good cut but plain chargrill steak with perhaps a bit of sauce on the side. If I just feel like eating beef, I'd go to either one.
But mind you, a lot of Malaysians are starting to be more discerning about their steaks. We now get emails from people asking about 'aged' steaks and the difference. One year back, we don't get these types of email. So, I think.. there is a shift in the tastebuds.

Oh yes Eagle's Nest is still operating. I was there around Father's day. And was very satisfied with our two steaks. Still itching to return for more.

I think the safest is to order the 'PRIME' steaks in any place you go for the best cut/meat.
Or DIY cook steaks from FOGAL

ok, major steak lover here...so here's my take...
Jakes - Useless, overpriced, over cooked. Complete waste of time
Gaucho Grill at Chulan - Not bad, but over cooked, and not 'melt in the mouth' enough
Angus Steak at Pavillion - Excellent, but ambiance isnt exactly fun...
Best I've had in KL so far!!!
Nero Vivo!!!! (Jalan Ceylon)- they have a 800Gm (yes 800!!) T bone going for about Rm90, thats as big as a child, is melt in the mouth, and is as satisfying as a great steak gets!!!!
Make a reservation though, as Nerovivo is always fully booked.
Enjoy....

My fav two places for steaks are Eagle Nest and Prime...
Eagle's Nest is a simple, unpretentious outlet which really serves value for money steaks with lovely sauces (their Bearnaise sauce is to-die-for).
Ambience is simple, so good for family outings, friends..
Been a while since I've been back there, but really sad to hear that it might be closing down due to poor business. Still remember the Claudia, the owner, telling me the story about how the were "forced" to move from Langkawi...
Prime at Le Meridien Hotel on the other hand has the "wow" factor given its high-back chairs, open kitchen concept and excellent service.
Steaks here are of very good quality, and the complimentary bread they serve you is fresh from the oven (I know this because there was once I asked why the paprika bread was not served, the waitress told me they had run out of it that night, but they could get some made asap, and 15 mins later, a hot and fresh loaf was on the table!!!) and comes with 3 different types of butter! The other thing I like about Prime is that your side dishes are served to you in separate mini-pots and put in the middle so you can share!!
Prices are much steeper here of course, but with a Starwood card, you can get 50% off (for 2 persons)! So Prime is better choice if you the ambience to impress that special someone.

I had the Kobe sirloin steak at Angus Steakhouse in Pavillion on Sunday. They had a promotion which included a salad, soup and dessert. At RM280.00 for a thick cut 200 gm portion, it certainly wasnt cheap but it was a great experience. Given the ambience, location and food quality, the corkage charged of RM30 for a bottle of wine was very reasonable.
The week before I had a good tenderloin at Sassorosso in Lorong Yap Kwan Seng. While the tenderloin was nowhere near the same class as the Kobe steak, it was grilled prefectly and came with a wonderful wine reduction sauce.

By far, the best steak in town would be Prime at LE Meridien, KL.
The Ship at Damansara Jaya is good too. They can be inconsistent though...

Good Ol American Steaks - JAKES CHARBROILED, i'm addicted to that place, they really know how to slap meat on a grill. Prime i must say is ridiculously over rated, no, maybe not over rated, more like over priced.
Or you could take a trip to Bona Sera - ss2, Chef Enzo whips up a pretty mean Angus Tbone there...unfortunately thats the closest to steaks that the restaurant comes to.
*edit* forgot to mention, Bona Sera isn't halal. sorry my mistake.

Surprisingly, the best steak I've had in KL is in Plaza TTDI at a little bistro called La Vista. It was soft and very tasty, and the sauce was great. Servings were just the right portion for one person. Dessert was alright only, though. I've also been to Prime and was disappointed because the steak was dry on the outside, which is just a sin because they were so expensive. La Vista is quite affordable and a great steak choice (NB: I've only been there once, but was really blown away).
