Melbourne Food & Wine Festival

Since Friday we've been the guests of Victoria who have taken us on a whirlwind eating tour of Melbourne. The 2010 Melbourne Food and Wine Festival is '12 Glorious Days' of food and drinking debauchery of the finest kind. So for starters we're going to do short recaps of what's been going on daily while we are still here and I can still reach the keyboard with my ever-pudgier fingers. Here are 3 bites on each of the stuff we did. Longer morsels to follow soon.

Longest Lunch

-Over 1,000 people showed up this year in various hats and parasols. The day was hot and breezy, near perfect for an outdoor lunch with 999 strangers.
- The theme was oriental and we were entertained throughout the lunch by dragon dances, martial artists,…  Continue reading »

Watch Cake Boss on Discovery Travel & Living

Announcement

I am no dummy in the kitchen. I cook, bake, and experiment constantly but even with this experience under my belt, I take my hat off to cake decorators. The work they do is creative, delicate, precise, and downright difficult!

To launch the new show Cake Boss, Discovery Travel & Living set up a cake-decorating workshop and I was able to try my hand at it. It was not easy at all but I had a lot of fun playing with the sugar paste and decorating my very own flowerpot cupcake.

I now genuinely have a new found respect for cake decorators. It is one thing to pipe a bit of frosting on a cake and it's another thing to shape and mould little intricate…  Continue reading »

The flame and bright red door marks the rendezvous spot...

All the food and drinks were prepared by us in some way, shape, or form. Aida, our Chef in Residence, baked yummilicious treats such as a decadent chocolate cake and the much-loved butterscotch pecan cake along with a ton of pretty cupcakes. Shida, one of our hosts, cooked up a spread of goodies with treats such as bihun goreng, three types of quiches, cucur udang, and more! Aurora J. and Captain…  Continue reading »

We figured you might need some inspiration as to where to go for a delicious CNY or Valentine's meal so we've complied our favourite five for each:

Chinese New Year Yee Sang and Dinner

Golden Phoenix at Equatorial Hotel
This restaurant is a favourite Yee Sang spot especially during lunchtime. Its location is smack in the middle of Sultan Ismail making it very easy to access. This year they have specialties such as Snow Pear, Seaweed, Jelly Fish, Salmon or Abalone Yee Sang.

Tai Ze Heen at Prince Hotel and Residences
The treasures here are tossed in a dressing that is a bit different from the usual citrusy vinegar. A mouth puckering plum dressing is used to coat the shredded veggies. Choose from options such as Tuna, Shellfish, Shark’s Fin and more to add in to your toss.

New Menu at Kechara Oasis

by Alexa P., on Sat, February 06, 2010 - 1:14:51 AM, 0 comment
New Launches

Whether you are a vegetarian or not, the array of food at Kechara Oasis is sure to please. They recently added some new specialties to their menu and we headed over to check it out.

There’s the appetizer known as the Five Mandala of Prosperity which signifies harmony, wealth, success, longevity, and fame/reputation. The dish has satay skewers cooked in a sticky sweet sauce, fried Vietnamese spring rolls, a medley of sautéed veggies known as the Kechara garden, five spice sausage slices, and fried butter mushrooms. This is perfect for sharing banquet style with a large group.

There’s also a mock steamed miso cod, the “fish” made with oats, soya beans and seaweed. The seaweed gives this a fishy taste and gives this dish a wonderful flavour. This is great with the mushroom kailan with kelp….a slippery dish packed with a lot of flavour and nutrition.Continue reading »
