Our Palm Oil Shorties at Aliyaa rocked! And of course, as with any Friedchillies event, food was aplenty! We even had to pack the leftovers for guests to take home with them. The theme ‘Steaks, Sausages, Music, Food and Film’ best describes the tone of the event.

Many guests showed up for our shorties

The Palm Oil Shorties was a way to create more awareness on the issues surrounding Palm Oil. We had students and professionals send in their submissions for our competition and on Saturday we played the four that were shortlisted. For the student category we had ‘My Palm Oil Estate’ by Steven Yap and “Let The Truth Be Told’ by Jared Lee. In the professional category we had ‘A Special Tree for Everyone’ by Cut Mutia and ‘The Palm Behind the Oil’ by Perez and Najib Ariffin. In addition to these four films we had a private screening of AFC’s Good Fat Bad Fat.

Everyone is chomping down on the delicious food

Once the films were over we had a BBQ of steaks, sausage and chicken wings to compliment the delicious Sri Lankan dishes Aliyaa had prepared. While everyone tucked in to the food we had two local bands play a few tunes. Barbershop Trinity rocked out acoustically with some cover tunes including a very nice rendition of Edwin Mc Cain’s ‘I’ll Be’ (Simon Cowell would have been proud). Jared Lee’s band Once Upon A Time There Was A Sausage Named Bob played a few of their own cool tunes including the piece ‘Let The Truth Be Told’ which was written and filmed as a music video for the shorties.

The event wrapped up with a mini awards ceremony where engraved frying pans were handed out to the winners. Steven Yap won best film for the Student Category with Jared Lee as Runner Up. For the professional category, both films were awarded an Official Selection prize.

All in all we had a great event with our fans and friends and we hope that everyone learned a little bit more about Palm Oil. Recently, Cumi & Ciki and JustHeavenly blogged about the event as well. Catch their posts...
