Asean Heritage Trail

As many of you know last Thursday was the launch of Asean Heritage Trails by Chef Wan. This firecracker of a chef will be bringing Asean chefs into Malaysia to showcase regional cooking.

It was full house for the launch

This is all the part of making Malaysia the center for Asean inspired food. During this month-long event too there will be appearances by much-loved Malaysian chef personalities like Celine Marbeck, Florence Tan, Chef Shukri, Chef Sabri, Chef Zaidah and Chef Riz.

I have always cooked Malaysian food when I am abroad, we have to bring back chefs to the Asean discipline.

During the launch Chef Wan spoke at length about the intermingling of cuisine, he himself having a Nyonya grandmother who taught him in the kitchen. Then The Minister of Tourism Datuk Seri Dr. Ng Yen Yen came to stage. She eloquently laid out the ministry's commitment to have Malaysian cuisine as a main component of all future tourism programmes.

Gastro-tourism is becoming a big thing in the world and Malaysia has lots to offer when it comes to food.

She also encouraged youths to consider being a chef as a viable career choice. "Chef Wan has paved the way," she smiled. She added that it's a tough career but a very rewarding one.

After the launch Datuk Seri and Chef Wan did a cooking segment. It was clear by the affectionate camaraderie between the two that they've had a long friendship. Chefy made a kerabu Nyonya, a nod to Datuk Seri's and his roots.

We have to balance the sweet, the sour and the spicy. Mmm! I love kerabu, do you like kerabu Datuk Seri?

"Did he always talk this much when he was small?" Datuk Seri asks Chefy's mum.

"Ya la, the teacher used to put me at all corners of the room until she ran out of corners but I always made good grades", Chefy explained while mixing up the kerabu deftly. What a pro!

"This is really good!" She exclaimed trying the finished dish. Later they did a tour of all the stalls that served food from all over the region.

The Malaysia Asean Heritage Tour will be going on in Lot10 until end of this week and Avenue K from 12th November.
