Traditional Chinese Kueh Gadgets

Product Review

I love my chinese kuehs and cookies. Pineapple tarts, love letters and bahulus fresh from the mold. Of course I just have to go to the nearest store if I have a hankering for them. Gone are the days where we actually know the effort that goes into making these treats, and maybe now they are even being mass-produced with machines.

For this very reason we picked up a few of the traditional gadgets used to make treats such as love letters or kueh kapit, bahulu and mooncakes. With gadgets in hand I sought out simple enough recipes to recreate these in the FC Kitchen.

Let me start by saying that it is not easy to make any of these, no matter how simplistic the recipes are. There are skills and techniques required which I do not possess, but in saying that, I was able to recreate versions of these treats using these gadgets. I suggest you give these gadgets…  Continue reading »

The Last Polka Ice Cream

by Alexa P., on Wed, July 07, 2010 - 7:49:42 PM, 6 comment
Product Review

The one major gripe I have about good ice cream here in Malaysia is that you either have to fork out a lot of dosh on a small imported tub of Ben and Jerry’s or you settle for the local made varieties that aren’t unique in flavour and often don’t taste much like ice cream.

This is where The Last Polka fills in the gap. They create homemade ice cream right here in KL made with 100% natural ingredients. What makes it even better is that they combine the creaminess of French-style ice cream with comforting Asian flavours.

These were the little sample tubs of Nutella and White Coffee

My interest peaked when I heard of their specialty, the Horlicks flavour. It is without a doubt my favourite mamak…  Continue reading »

Bialetti Moka Coffee Pot

by Adly, on Thu, May 06, 2010 - 1:16:47 AM, 6 comment
Product Review

Coffee drinks can be a bit expensive to have at cafés if you are a regular drinker. You may want to invest in a Moka Pot and experiment at making some yourselves at home.

Let me introduce you to the Bialetti Moka Pot, a stovetop coffee maker that you can get for around RM168++ for a 3 cup version. No need to spend thousands for an expresso maker. This is a good start for new home brewers. Its made of aluminium, so its light and heats easily. Has 3 main parts, the water chamber, upper coffee chamber and a funnel filter where you put the coffee. The handle is made from bakelite plastic so it does not transfer heat from the aluminium body. It looks really shiny and if a BattleStar Galactica Cylon drinks coffee, the Bialetti Coffee Pot…  Continue reading »

Maggi Goes Healthy with Atta Noodles

by Adly, on Thu, April 22, 2010 - 7:14:07 PM, 1 comment
Product Review

Maggi will be launching a new line of healthy instant noodles soon. This new product will have its noodles made from Atta Wheat Flour (the stuff they make chapati from) instead of the normal refined flour versions. Also, this has no MSG, high fibre and protein content and promises to be a healthier choice from the normal product line. Families in a hurry and need the occasional quick noodle fix can now have less worries about nutritional values that is associated with instant noodles. Good News!

From a quick research, we found that they have introduced this line in India a few years ago but perhaps now decided that Malaysia is ready for this product. This would probably explain the Chapati Keema flavour. Also, Maggi have taken the trouble…  Continue reading »

Bend ‘n’ Bake 12 Cup Mini Muffin Pan

by Honey, on Thu, February 04, 2010 - 12:01:23 AM, 0 comment
Product Review

I got this snazzy silicone mini muffin pan for Christmas and been trying to find the time to check it out. It's rubbery and fold-able hence does not take much space in your kitchen at all. The front picture of the box had a hand taking out freshly baked chocolate chip muffins. Lo and behold, the recipe is on the back of the box.

As far as recipes go, this one is pretty easy. We had everything in our pantry anyway- well we ran out of chocolate chips because someone has been snacking on it in the office. So to sub it, I chopped up some Lindt dark chocolate and stirred it in. And we ran out of self-raising flour, so I just used all purpose and added 2 tsp of baking powder. That's all you need to do, stir everything in and start filling up the silicon pan.Continue reading »

The Simpsons Organic Pasta

by Adly, on Thu, January 28, 2010 - 5:23:08 PM, 0 comment
Product Review

Well I guess Bart's well known caption 'Eat My Shorts' now have a completely new meaning. Whilst we were at the Cold Storage in Solaris, we found this cute little 500g packet labelled The Simpsons Organic Pasta. The funny thing is that it has pasta shapes of the main characters of the Simpsons. Bart, Homer, Marge, Lisa and Maggie. The best thing is that you can eat them.

The pasta is made by the Uk food company Fun Foods 4 All, under license by the the Twentieth Century Fox Film of course.Takes 9 minutes to cook (it says so on the packet) and kids will love it in soups. Grownups to, I think...…  Continue reading »

Cuisinart: 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Iron

by Alexa P., on Wed, December 16, 2009 - 7:36:59 PM, 0 comment
Product Review

I enjoy the texture of waffles…crisp on the outside and yet soft and cakey on the inside. Douse them with syrup and you’ve got yourself a delicious treat. This is usually a treat I buy at waffle stands instead of making at home as I don’t have a waffle maker, so I was pretty excited to play around with the Cuisinart waffle iron.

The perfect breakfast dish that is sure to please

Crisp fluffy waffles are just a few steps away with this easy to use waffle iron. All you have to do is plug it in and the iron will start to heat up. When the batter is ready to be poured on the little indicator light will turn green and if you’re not paying attention it also beeps to alert you that it’s ready to use. I would suggest pouring about 1 ½ cups…  Continue reading »
