I know that shaved ice drinks are best in sweltering noon-time heat. However sometimes after a good and filling dinner I do find myself hankering something sweet and not too heavy. A nice bowl of frisky ABC is just right and hey... at the end of the day it's just frozen water right?
Lately, as I walk in the hot sun feeling my brain boil over I've been having more and more dreams of ABC. A sweating bowl of Air Batu Campur (Mixed Ice) with a mountain of snow running rivulets of rainbow syrups. And underneath this mountain is a goldmine of edible treasure, red bean, cendol, cincau, corn and coloured jellies. It's like eating the cast of Bejewelled.
So what does a good ABC consists of? For me the ice has to be shaved just right- not too chipped that makes you feel all your cavities, neither should it be too fine like Es Teller. I always find Es Teller a little infuriating as the ice is so fine, it melts before it reaches your tongue. Good ABC still needs a bit of substance to the ice so it can soak up all the good sweet syrups and linger like a whisper down your throat.
As far as syrups go, some good old fashioned sweet rose syrup, evap milk and gula melaka. Although I have friends who lick their bowls clean, I confess I've never been too much of a fan of the stuff below- preferring to slurp the delicious slush on top.
"Imagine this on a hot day..."
When I was small there was a place in Ipoh where I used to have ais kepal. This is just a handful of ice slapped on paper/ plastic with syrup drizzled on top. This is just the ticket to quench after-school thirst. Happy days.
Stall 41 at SS2 never fails me when I'm in a mood for some after-dinner shaved ice. It gets the consistency of ice and syrups just right. You can either have it in a bowl or in a tall glass. The tall glass comes with a straw so you can slurp and eat it like a sundae but I still like mine in a bowl. Being in a Foodcourt means that the place is noisy and nowadays I find it too brightly lit. However, best thing is that if you are feeling peckish, there are plenty of other stalls here for you to graze on.
This stall also sells different fresh fruit juices and herbal tea.
An ABC is RM2.30
