Crizz Garden Cafe

Crizz Garden's menu might be a little on the i-want-to-serve-everything side but there are dishes here they do really wall.

If you happen to run out of options to eat around the Bukit Bintang area (god forbid), there is always Crizz Garden Cafe which is just a stone's throw away from the bustling heart of the city. Although this is a usual haunt for the hungry tourist, fear not! We all know that the rule of thumb is that the more locals the better. So trust me, it is swarming with locals. If you come here at lunch, navigating through tables of people indulging merrily in their own world will make your own tummy growl at the sight.

For lunch, banana leaf is a must. As the establishment was built on a slope, there is a choice of dining either on the top or bottom part. The lower part of the restaurant has a more ‘local mamak’ feel to it, whereas the top part is more of a restaurant cum bar. Come for lunch and there is not much difference between the two but during dinner the upstairs will be buzzing with going out punters.

Other than bananaleaf, there is a hodge podge of 'international style' food on the menu including Middle Eastern fare. However, we decided on the tandoori set first. The chicken was tasty and didn’t come smothered with bright red food colouring but aptly red from all the herbs and spices. The naan was very light, though missing the fluffiness some establishments have but it made it up in crispiness. The dhal they have here is interesting. It had a full bodied taste with a lot of texture.

"The tandoori set will satisfy"

The Ceasar salad was refreshing to have between all the mounds of rich foods. It was slightly tangy providing a balance of flavours to the meal. We also had the opportunity to try out the Shawarma. From the first few bites, it was a little disappointing as the pita bread was not toasted and the fillings were drier than usual. They do try to alleviate this by putting in crisp salad leaves. Try instead their Chicken Beriani though there is a little digging involved. The chicken comes buried under a hill of gold fragrant grains of beriani. The meat just fell off the bone and having absorbed most of the tasty goodness from the beriani spices. It came with six condiments comprising of spicy achar, cucumber and onion thairu, indian potato salad, pumpkin salad, chunky dhal, and a pea based sauce. The way I like to eat it is have a bit of everything, then pile it all up and stuff it in. Every condiment is meant to help enhance the beriani flavours and as a glutton what better way to do so then to have the whole prism experience in one bite.

But the definite must-haves here are the Lassi's! Delicious thairu (yoghurt) is blended with a variant of fresh fruits. I just love the thick rich texture that comes from the hard work of sucking the thick shakes in. Just take your pick of fruits available from strawberries, oranges, apple and many more. Or there is always the classic salt lassi. However a sure win with even the pickiest eaters is definitely the Mango Lassi, churned from fresh sweet ripe mangoes. With the tangy-ness from the thairu and sweet fluid texture of the tantalising mangoes, it is just pure liquid gold. For something sweeter there is their special deep-fried ice cream! Think crisp sweet puff pastry wrapped around a scoop of chocolate, chocolate chip, or strawberry ice cream. Rest assure their fried ice cream is truly unique! With generous sprinkles of chocolate rice, some slightly melted from the heat of the deep-fried ice cream, this is just a outhful of magnificence. Digging through the crisp crunchy skin you will find a lava of ice-cream with a deeply frozen core. This is definitely something you shouldn't miss out on.

Come lunch or dinner, there is always something good to munch on at Crizz. Just keep in mind to have banana leaf for lunch. Service is excellent! Apparently when you have a flat tyre, the boss will personally come and have his employees change it. Now that's good service.

Pros: They go the extra mile in service

Cons: Tourist jostling. Sheer number of choices can be overwhelming
