Gandhi’s

In general vegetarian food is somehow always equated to rabbit food. Most people can’t even fathom being vegetarian for a day fearing that they might starve. Well Gandhi’s is no where close to being rabbit food and you’ll definitely leave satisfied and full.

The food they serve at Gandhi's is the usual Indian and Chinese fare just without the meat. During the afternoon the food is laid out nasi campur style with many delectable choices. In the evenings however you can order dishes to enjoy. There are specialties such as sambal ikan, mutton varuval, popcorn-fried chicken, and more. All of these are made with various soy proteins to mimic the texture of meat. They are then cooked just as you would cook a regular meat dish. No garlic or onions are used in the cooking here, so that every branch of vegetarianism can eat here. Despite these alterations the food does not lack in the flavour department and I’m sure any meat lover would be able to appreciate the various dishes on offer.

The sambal ikan is tangy and spicy and just slightly sweet. The “meat” is soft and almost fish-like although it doesn’t quite have the flakiness. I especially enjoyed the mutton varuval that is robust in flavour. Since I’m not a fan of mutton I ate this happily knowing that it wasn’t mutton but still had the delicious essence of a varuval. The little popcorn chicken pieces are extremely addictive. Dipped in an orange tinged spicy batter these are fried till crisp. They could easily be a tasty movie snack.

"Lots of choices and robust flavours!"

On the actual veggie side there is a wide variety. My favourite is the battered and deep fried cauliflower. These are so good! The batter is crisp and the cauliflower on the inside is sweet and tender. There are also the usual fried bitter gourd crisps that are just as delicious if you like that slight bitter tang. The Chinese style mixed veggies are just as good as you’d find in any restaurant around and the cooked shredded cabbage is tasty.

There is a vegetarian Yong Tau Foo section open during lunch as well but I did not have the chance to try it. I’m sure this would be interesting to check out at some point in the future.

After lunch I felt extremely full and the effects of a banana leaf type food coma were creeping up slowly. This was a good indication to me that the meal was filling and satisfying despite the lack of meat. I will be making a trip there soon to try out their dinner dishes on offer. They also do vegetarian catering for functions and parties.
