Klebang Coconut Shake

We took a mini roadtrip to Melaka with Nyonya Laksa on the brain, never in out wildest dreams did we think we'd leave with the memory of delicious coconut shakes carved into our minds.

It was a sweltering hot day in Melaka, the kind where your brain feels fuzzy, water doesn't do anything to help your state of dehydration and all you can think of is ice. We were driving around in search of something refreshing when we came across the famous Klebang coconut shake stand on the roadside across from the ocean. This stand opens up at 2pm everyday and stays open for as long as it takes to run out of all their coconuts. It was only 2:15 and the tables were filling up fast, many were already lined up waiting to take this delicious shake home.

When I first got there I couldn't see what the fuss was all about. Yeah ok a coconut shake...so what? In fact a part of me was expecting something similar to a vanilla milkshake and this was doing nothing for my need to cool off. The thought of something rich and creamy was the exact opposite of something cooling and refreshing. Seeing the throngs of people lining up slowly changed my mind though. Surely this had to be the cure for the heat.

You have a choice between regular which is just the shake and special which comes with an additional scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. The stall is constantly buzzing with movement there's one table where the coconuts are being cracked open and the water is being separated from the meat. Another table houses the blender and the ice box filled with ice cream and ice cubes. The coconut flesh and water is blended together with the ice cubes and some vanilla ice cream. It's a very simple concoction.

"OMG! It was perfect!"

I was dying of thirst when the shake made its way over to my table and I took an eager sip. OMG! It was perfect! It was extremely refreshing, juicy, and creamy all at the same time. How can such opposite extremes exist in a drink? The coconutty flavour instantly transports your mind to tropical beaches, sparkling turquoise water, and fun in the sun. I also started wondering why more beach front properties are not capitalising on this simple yet amazing beverage. Surely this could take hotels and resorts by storm and they could even do an alcoholic variety with a touch of Bacardi!

There is something about this drink that will have you craving for more...on our drive back to KL we kept randomly saying "mmm that coconut shake...I wish I could have another" and the very next week we were attempting to make it in the office. This coconut shake here will have you addicted, so tread carefully...especially if you live far away from Melaka. The stall also has some teatime treats such as nasi lemak, currypuffs, and springrolls making it the ideal spot to kick back and relax while trying to keep out of the scorching sun.
