La Suisse

Heading over to La Suisse on a warm Friday night, I had no idea what to expect. Tucked away in a small shop in Bukit Damansara, this Swiss-themed restaurant has been around for ages but this is my first time here.

From the outside, the restaurant is nothing much to look at, it looks like a small café, even slightly run down. Inside it is simply decorated, with cosy lighting. It’s very empty tonight; only 2 other tables are occupied, so we pretty much have the restaurant to ourselves. The owner himself is ushering us in and we’re all excited and chatty, we’re here to celebrate a friend’s birthday so we’re ravenous and looking forward to some good food.

Everything on the menu sounds quite fancy, for starters there’s fresh garden salad “Mimosa”, Escargot a la Suisse, and somebody at our table is insisting we go for the Cheese ‘Malakow’ and the Raclette, so we order those two to share. The Cheese Malakow is described on the menu as “deep fried swiss cheese” and the Raclette is “hot slices of swiss cheese” so I can’t really tell what we’re going to get.

When it arrives, you can definitely tell the difference. The ‘Malakow’ are deep fried cheese puffs, crispy on the outside and oozing with deliciously gooey cheese on the inside. There are 4 pieces and the puffs are quite large, so this is a pretty good starter to share, but a little pricey, around RM20 a plate.

The Raclette is a plate of melted cheese, literally, served with a side of pickles and boiled potatoes. The taste of the cheese is a bit too strong for my liking, and leaves a bitter aftertaste in the mouth. I’ve heard that the steak here is really good, so I go for the sirloin steak with mushroom sauce. They have some interesting sauces here, like the Mussel Herb sauce, which another friend orders. We’re also having the grilled chicken with pasta and mushrooms, and the dory fish with green pepper butter sauce.

"Crispy outside, oozing with goey cheese inside"

The steak is nice and big and the done-ness is just right, smothered in sauce. My mushroom sauce is delicious, while the Herb mussel sauce is also a winner, with 2 whole mussels spooned on top of the steak, giving a new dimension to the taste. It comes with generous sides of blanched carrots and green beans, fresh and crunchy. The potatoes are also interesting, sliced thinly piled into a type of ‘potato cake’ with a crispy top. I found the potatoes a little bland though, maybe it could’ve used a bit more salt. The grilled chicken with pasta was very good, the chicken was tender and succulent but nicely grilled on the outside, served with fettuccine tossed in some oil and herbs. The mushroom sauce was the same as the steak, so not much variation there. The dory fish was a bit of a disappointment, the fish was fresh and nicely fried but the green pepper butter sauce was quite tasteless, and the peppercorn tasted raw.

The service is good here, water is constantly refilled and jugs of it are provided at the table. The bread rolls are complementary and are so good I could just eat them all night, soft, warm and perfect with butter. The food arrives right on time as well, so I have to give them an A+ for that.

There is quite an extensive wine and desert menu, and since it was a birthday dinner, we ordered their special vanilla ice cream in red wine and cherries, complete with birthday candle. This vanilla ice cream balances out the sweet-sour taste of the cherries perfectly and makes for an interesting and unusual treat.

La Suisse is a great place for a nice intimate dinner, with great service, good food and minimal interruptions, but it comes with a pretty hefty price tag. The damage for that night? Around RM70 a head. Probably not your neighbourhood makan joint , but a pretty good place for a well-deserved treat.

Pros: Good service and quite private

Cons: Quite pricey

Address: 8, Medan Setia 2, Plaza Damansara, Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur
