I'm sitting in a wide airy lounge area, comfortably seated on a sofa with plush pillows, enjoying the view of KL through the large glass windows. I feel strangely content sitting here, and I haven't even started eating yet! Yes, I would say that the Lobby lounge of Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur is a wonderful place to spend a lazy weekend (or weekday for you lucky ladies of leisure!) afternoon.
What goes better with a lazy afternoon than an afternoon tea set? But if you are expecting your usual fare of cream and scones, then you are very much mistaken! Le Meridien has decided to take you on a journey of Discovery through their afternoon tea set, aptly named 'Taste Of Discovery', where each month you will get to sample a wonderful tea menu that revolves around a special monthly ingredient.
For the month of May it was 'Spices', and this month it is the sweet sounding 'Sugar'. I smile in delight as a 3-tier is placed in front of me, now the adventure begins! For an afternoon tea set, it certainly is generous, so you might even want to skip lunch altogether! On my tiers were Chantilly Cream Croquet, Hot Bread and Butter pudding, Home-made Raspberry Macaroon, Cherry roll with vanilla ice-cream, Pot de crème Caramel, Oreo Cheese Cake, Passion Fruit Cream with Crunchy Nougatine, Orange crème Brulee, Red Fruits Compote crumble, Kueh Lapis, a Gulab Jamun Skewer and a sweet honey and watermelon tonic shot. Talk about extensive!
"Sweet somethings for your afternoon tête-à-tête"
My personal favourites were The Cherry roll with vanilla ice-cream, as the ice-cream did not melt even though I left it to almost last, and it reminded me a little of my favourite childhood treat Ice-cream bread. Other notworthy items were the delicious Oreo cheesecake, the passion fruit cream which was like mousse served in a spoon with the crunchy nougatine that tasted like caramel and my piece de resistance? The divine Orange crème Brulee, which had me swooning with pleasure. The Gulab Jamun however, is definitely not for the faint hearted, so proceed with caution! (hint : it gives death by chocolate a run for its money in the 'sweetness' stakes)
Each item comes in a bite-sized portion but it is still enough to fill you to the brim. This set also includes a free flow of Illy Coffee and heavenly Ronnefeldt Tea, with no one giving you the dirty eye for staying too long or asking for too many refills. This is a great way to sample Ronnefeldt's line of teas, without burning a huge hole in your pocket. And what does this afternoon of pure indulgence cost? At RM32++ per person, this is definitely a steal. It also might be best to make a reservation beforehand, especially on weekends.
Overall, 'Taste Of Discovery – Sugar' is definitely for those with a real sweet tooth, so if sweets are not your thing, check out next month's set 'Taste Of Discovery – Coffee'. With a new exciting ingredient every month, we are waiting in anticipation for the next round of great creations to come out of the Le Meridien Kitchen.
Pros: Value for money and something new to look forward to each month
Cons: Menu changes monthly so if you have a favourite 'Discovery' menu cherish it!
