My Kitchen: Revisited

Recently My Kitchen renovated their little eatery to a more modern in look and feel. But is the food still good? We decided to revisit My Kitchen and see if the food is still the same delicious home-cooking.

I must confess, I came here on a promise that there is durian cendol to be had. Last time I had this was in Melaka so it's fitting I guess to have it in a eatery serving Melaka homecooking. Slurp… I always thought that durian cendol is a bit of an oxymoron. Cendol in itself is supposed to cool you down, the shaved ice, the wriggly cendol and refreshing sugar-coconut milk concoction. Then you add in heaty dollops of durian. Like fire and ice, it’s supposed to clash but yet the creaminess of durians lends a richness to the cendol.

Anyway… last time we were here, we ordered the brinjals, flavourful mutton soup and fall off the bones lotus chicken. This time we opted for a simpler meal. A plate piled with chicken rice balls, a serving of crispy tofu with a sweet, sour sauce, yau mak with fermented beans and crisp fried cincaluk omelette. Okay the omelette is a repeat order, can't help it, it's goood...

Right my mouth just watered writing all of that down. Not really a fan of chicken rice balls, it’s howevernice once in a while to bite into one, rich and slightly fatty with chicken stock. One was more than enough for me. Three chicken rice balls translate to a plate of rice.

"More durian on that cendol... puh-leazzze..."

The cincaluk omelette is crisp and salty, lovely with rice as was the yau mak. Something about crunchy greens stir fried with fermented things that's just addicitve. What I really could not get enough of was the crispy tofu. Done well, this is a dream of a dish. Most places do not use good tofu hence even though the sauce is nice and sweet, the tofu itself is bland. Here it’s done very well, the tofu on its lonesome is tasty, the contrast between the crisp outer skin and the inner softness a delight. Then you top it off with the sweet-sour Thai sauce and slivers of crunchy onions and cucumbers- delish!

Finally we arrived at the durian cendol. As a cendol in itself, it’s very yummy. Good gula Melaka and santan intertwined nicely and they don’t skimp on the cendol. However I would like more durian with it. My fellow diners thought it was just nice, since too much durian can be a bit of an overkill in a cendol. After a few minutes of heated debate, we ordered another one just to be sure. Yes... I still think just a little bit more durian should do the trick. Next time I'll order extra. Still it was a nice end to a satisfying meal. If you are in the mood for something heavy we heard that the mutton curry is good too.

Sunway Mas is coming along well as a food place. It's chock full of franchises of favourite eating stops, for instance the Jalan Sultan Loh Shu Fun has a branch here. Hmm… I see a FoodCrawl here in my future.
