Nasi Padang Kg. Baru

Sometimes after searching high and low on the seven seas, fighting off sea serpents and other blood-thirsty corsairs you find treasure. And it makes all those trying times worth it. This is gold and silver and jewels rolled into delicious dishes that would make any pirate captain cross oceans of fire to partake.

In rare times you discover gems and when you do, treasure it. I found this lovely place while wandering around Kampung Baru looking for my ex-nasi padang makcik who disappeared and probably went back to Sumatra. One of my criteria for choosing restaurants is to see if its packed and the variety of dishes on offer. Soooo lo and behold I found a new love have I have enjoyed its pleasure and generously shared with many friends and family.

My favourite dishes here are ayam goreng cili, daging goreng dendeng and tunjang masak lemak. Other dishes that are good here are daging rendang, ayam percik, ikan keli goreng, ayam masak lemak and ikan masak lemak.

Ok let me tell you how to have an unbelievable experience here. Make sure you come around 12 noon as that's when their dishes come out. Get a plate of hot rice on banana leaf. Get a thigh drumstick quarter ayam goreng cili with the chillies and drench your rice with lots of oil. Then get some pieces of the awesome daging dendeng with more chillies. Scoop up the most tender portion of tunjang and spread the gravy generously. For veggies get some pucuk ubi kayu rebus with sambal belacan and last but not least a dollopful of sambal hijau.

"Are you ready for an unbelievable experience?"

The ayam goreng cili is so tender and juicy it drops off the bone. The dendeng is crispy yet the beefy juices are still intact. The tender tunjang is so perfectly cooked your teeth will just bite through this lovely dish. Mix all this with the pucuk ubi kayu and sambal hijau and scoop it into your mouth. The mixture of multiple tastes will make your brain register a WOW.

Another reason why I love this place so much is the lovely family who runs it treat me very well. They know my favourite drink which is limau ais with crushed ice and normally sends it to my table without me needing to order it. I understand what the TV show Cheers means when I am here.

Other dishes that are great here as well and well-liked by my family are Minang-style beef rendang, ayam gulai, masak lemak ikan, belut goreng, ayam and ikan bakar. On rare occasions their excellent otak masak lemak is also served. Forget about the cholesterol and live a little. It's not every day you get intellectual food.

Our enlarged family loves this place so much we make arrangements to come here for weekend lunches. My Mum and Auntie are always amazed at the quality of their cooking and we go back discussing about it all the way home.

Nasi Padang Kampung Baru is a part of my life and I welcome it to be part of yours too.

Welcome to treasure island.

I love the food in this place, everything is exceptionally good and because of the parking on the tree bit, I often take it home or to the hotel.. each time I'm in KL this is the the one place I must visit, I dont care much for other Padang restaurants, having been taken to a few poshier ones, the food here is honest and delicious...

I'm definitely gonna try this as soon as I can. Unfortunately my schedule makes it very difficult. Is it a good idea to go there for dinner?
