Phở Hóa Noodle Soup

With a menu full of symbols, just point and your dish will come forth

Indochinese

Nestled behind all the glorified franchises of many, lies this quaint looking noodle shop. The first few minutes upon finding it will be spent making funny faces in trying to figure out how to pronounce the names of the dishes. It may seem odd to our language, but the food pictures will definitely strike familiar chords of deliciousness.

Once cosily seated with a complimentary cup of water and all set to order the food, it hits you that it is actually written in a whole different language. Reading the menu makes you feel like connecting the dots on all the hyphenations and accentuations in each word. Thank god for translations! With those you can actually interpret and order the mouth watering dishes, instead of bluntly pointing out pictures to the waiter and saying "I want this!" One thing you will like at this place is the service as they are very fast and efficient and served with a friendly smile. For starters we had their Summer Roll and Chả Giò (fried roll), which is basically spring rolls one served fresh and the other fried.

Though seemingly similar the fillings are different, the Summer Roll has fresh iceberg lettuce, sweet basil, carrots, vermicelli, and chicken strips that are then dipped in a thick peanut sauce. Whereas the Chả Giò is just stuffed with minced beef and vegetables dipped in a fish sauce based emulsion. For those for looking for a special appetiser, they also have the Sugar Cane Prawns which is simply delicious! Prawn is finely chopped and mixed with a lemongrass herb mixture and then shaped on a sugar cane stick before being deep fried into perfection..mmm.. yummy! We had a wonderful time gnawing the sugar cane once we cleaned off the prawns bits. It somehow cleansed your palate and prepares your tastebuds for the next dish.

"You can order Beginner, Regular or Adventurous soup!"

For the main course the selection is quite wide. However their speciality is the noodle soup. The menu is divided into Beginner, Regular and also the Adventurous! So the Phở Tái, Nạm, Gầu, Gân, Sách (quite a mouthful when pronounced) will make out to be the Noodle Soup with steak, brisket, tendon, tripe, and fatty flank. Wow! This rightfully falls under the Adventurous section. Those not into the odd bits and pieces can just go for the steak and meatballs options. The bowl comes to you with the meats medium-cooked. As time passes by it will be cooked perfectly by the hot broth, so you will not be faced with the toughness of the meat. Every piece of meat is so tender that chewing is hardly needed here.

Oh, and not forgetting, for those with smaller stomachs it's best to order the regular size as their portions are humongous! A large could easily fill two bellies as we found this out the hard way. Each serving of the Noodle Soup comes with another platter of fresh bean sprouts, mint leaves, sweet basil and lime wedges with a side of their lemongrass infused chilli sauce which makes the whole meal complete.

Though the main selections are mainly beef orientated, there is also the Vermicelli with Grilled Chicken and Prawn (Bún Tôm Gà Nướng) for those staying away from red meat. And our vegetarian friends are not forgotten as they also have a vegetarian option for most of the dishes. The Vermicelli with Grilled Chicken and Prawns comes dry with a small bowl of sweet, sour and spicy sauce. At first some dipping action was done, but when we asked the waiter he said, “just pour it in and mix!” and so it became a messy but spectacular feast!

Though our tummies were stretched with satisfaction we still managed to order their unique Coconut Caramel Flan dessert. Bloated as we were this dessert was perfection. Chilled just right and the amount of caramel they put was not too sweet. On another note, their Longan drink that sounds quite dreary by name, has generous portions of dried sweet longan drowning in a tall fat cup. We approve!
