Raku Zen

Ahh... to be able to nip out at lunch in the middle of a day full of drudgery and eat your fill of fresh Japanese food. Or perhaps you've been toiling away and need a little pick me up. Great thing about Japanese food is that you can eat to satisfaction and still feel like you've had a healthy meal. Although we can't really vouch for the curry...

Japanese

There is this Japanese restaurant that old Captain Cracker usually hang out in which is more refined than his tasty but grotty places. Thus he has no choice but to behave if he wants to eat here, because all the high class sailors park their nice yachts and dine here.

The Rakuzen chain especially my favourite one in Plaza Damas serves some of the best Japanese food in KL. The sushi is always fresh all days of the week (they must get their fish from another pirate smuggler) and the meat is good here as well. Maybe Rakuzen means fresh in Japanese who knows?

Aside from dishes like sushi, sashimi, tempura, teppanyaki which are all perfectly executed I want to tell you my personal favourites which are the the dragon roll and the beef tongue both specialties of Rakuzen.

The first time I ate both these superb dishes was after getting a headache from working too hard late at night. I decided to reward myself by going to Rakuzen alone and asked the waitress to order me two of their best dishes. I was not disappointed.

The dragon roll is a massive tiger prawn fried and wrapped in sashimi rice with mayonnaise and avocado cut up Swiss roll style served on a boat for me (see they do honour pirates here!). It is an awesome experience to bite into one of these. Your mouth goes from the soft sticky rice to crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside prawn and the lovely mayonnaise and avocado in between. A few chomps of these and you know what joy means.

"Fancy a bit of tongue on tongue action?"

The beef tongue is another culinary adventure. The tongue is served raw and cut wafer thin with sliced shallots. We are given a hot pan heated with a flaming gel to cook these lovely morsels. I feel evil but alas I like my meat medium rare and do not cook it to max. It is truly exquisite with its juices hitting your tongue and pushing your tastebuds to the max (a little tongue on tongue experience here- heh). This must be the naughty part of Tortuga where only pirates get to go.

Sooo... after eating these two dishes my my working-too-hard-headache disappeared and my pirate grin came back again. Bento lunches here are also good. Get your grubby fingers on great combos like the grilled cod (super!) and tempura bento. Grilled mackerel here too never disappoints.

A friend of mine ordered Japanese chicken curry the other day because he grew addicted to it in New York. We thought he was nuts but after tasting it we became nuts about it too. The curry is lovely with the unique Japanese creamy pungent curry taste hitting it right at the nostrils like vindaloo but only with the spiciness at quarter its of its power. The fried breaded chicken breast is also yummy, crispy on the outside and juicy-tender on the inside. The lesson is don't laugh when your friend order the most ridiculous thing on the menu. You may have to eat your words- haha.

So friends make a beeline for this lovely island but be sure to call and reserve for lunch as it is always full. I am not the only pirate in town looking for fresh fish you know...

Its a buffet style restaurant right? Halal'ness? And the alternative restaurants as well... where is this jyu-raku?
