If your shopping excursions leave you craving for a good 'cup of satay', head on down to Food Republic in Pavillion KL and sate your appetite with some “flavour on a skewer”.
Popcorn, hot dogs and ice-cream cones share a few things in common. Aside from being absolutely yummy, these are the kind of foods that are known for their 'on-the-go' appeal, prepared fast and eaten straight up. Satay on the other hand, while being extremely delicious, isn't as easily consumed. Imagine walking around with a grease-paper 'bungkus' of satay in one hand (complete with wonky rubber band holding it all together) and trying to dunk it into the peanut sauce with the other hand; all whilst window shopping? Absurd!
This is why I am excited and inspired by a cool new addition to the Pavillion KL food court, a cute little outlet called Serai Satay Bar. The owner, Rina Abdullah and her crew have made it possible for us to enjoy 'Satay-on-the-go'. All thanks to the ingenious use of a large sized paper cup. This paper cup houses neatly up to 9 sticks of satay, plus a few 'condiment sticks' – skewers made up of onions, cucumbers and 'nasi impit'.
The top of the paper cup houses a plastic peanut sauce holder, so you simply reach into one side of the cup for your satay and dunk it into the other side. The result? Mouth-watering Satay smothered in peanut sauce all with one hand; no mess, no fuss. This is exactly why Rina opened the Satay Bar in the first place, to introduce the concept of Satay as 'on-the-go' food. She says her daughter came up with the paper cup idea, allowing customers to grab their Satay and eat it straight out of the cup, with no need to linger.

However, if you do choose to linger, the outlet itself is arranged similar to a sushi bar, with the interior of the outlet surrounded by glass, so you can sit right in front of the Satay grill and watch the cook grill up your order. The signature colours of magenta and olive green add personality to the outlet, giving it a funky and kitsch feel. And judging from the clientèle, they seem to attract quite a number of tourists, so this is great way to make our local cuisine more accessible to those who are not familiar with it.
But most importantly, how good is the satay? Pretty darn good, actually- but the winner has to be the satay sauce- chunky, flavourful and spicy. Choose from Chicken, Beef and Lamb satay, or be a bit adventurous and go for the 'Premium' choices ; Tripe, Venison and Prawn. Other items include Soto Ayam, Cucur Udang, and that famous (albeit a little weird) Johorean treat of 'Pisang Goreng' and 'Sambal Kicap'.
