Right... over 95 dishes? Okay as a rule when a place has too many dishes on the menu chances are some will fall short. Although having something for everyone makes up for this. Most places I know that gets too ambitious with menu offerings (except perhaps overseas Chinese restaurants that chuck everything including chips on their menus) usually do not survive long and yet here's SouLed Out- 13 years and still going strong. The secret? "Separate kitchens with their own head chefs", smiles Fanny Foo, the Propaganda Pixie. I know from most of my going out brethren that the Indian food here is good as well as the Chinese offerings. I, myself have always liked the nachos and sang har mien.
Today SouLed Out has yet another fresh look, lime green and deep turquoise awnings which I like better than their previous orange incarnation. It's still a great place to have a drink (mojitos yeah!) and service is attentive and professional. But to the food we must. Noodle dishes here pretty much rock. Other than the prawn noodles, I recommend the Hokkien Mee, nice and black with a suitably pungent sambal belacan. Also their beef kuey teow is always a good prelude to a night of chilling out.
If you are going the Western way, the pan fried garoupa on top of a spaghetti olio is quite tasty and like I said the nachos here are always good. They can even do smaller portions if you ask them nicely in case you just want a snack before the main meal. Indian dishes like the butter chicken is still good hours later if you take away and their reinsertion of spicy lamb cutlets slathered with spices and yogurt then barbecued is finger-licking delish.
"Slick and tasty with kick-ass sambal belacan"
Fanny said that one of the reasons they have survived so long is a very loyal clientele plus they also listen to them. One customer was upset that they took banana split off the menu. He kept bringing it up and now with the new menu, they have it back. Again I have to say that sometimes a good banana split is all you want. Here they put three scoops of ice cream and banana on a bed of cornflakes. However the winning dish of the day is the brand new praline chocolate mousse. Served in a glass and topped with a little dollop of whipped cream, save room for this.
The mousse is nice and chilled, firm with a soft center. Best thing is that within the rich chocolaty depths are hints of nuts- almonds ground into tiny crunchy bites. Mmm... definitely a dessert to come back for. As I settled back with my third (?) mojito, I glanced at other tables. The key to SouLed Out's success is the fact that it seems to cater to everyone. Families come here, business people looking to treat an out of town client. There's a table of girlfriends dressed to the nines having a bite before hitting the town and couples in a quiet corner. And its only Tuesday night. This place is buzzing.
One thing's for sure is that SouLed Out has found the formula that manages to keep everyone happy (free valet service included). So sit back, enjoy the evening and have another drink or two.
Opening Times: 12noon- 3pm, 6pm- 1am
Happy Hours: 12noon-3pm and 6pm-9pm
Pros: Extensive menu with something for everyone
Cons: It gets crowded some evenings so you might have to wait a little for the drinks
