Banana leaf has a reputation for putting people into a deeply satisfying food coma making sure its victims are rendered incapable of using their brains immediately after consuming. Which is why it’s probably best to order in banana leaf…so that you can just stretch back and doze off after eating…hee hee…
When I heard about a place that delivers banana leaf right to your door I was skeptical. My initial reaction at finding out about Spicy Corner was that banana leaf cannot be as good delivered to your home as when you go out to get it. However, knowing about its existence made me hungry for something spicy and filling for lunch and we were all a bit lazy to drive out of the office to get some. So we ordered in!
Our order took 1hr to arrive and we were pleased to see all the cartons filled to the brim with spicy delights! Each of the banana leaf sets come with the usual: 3 vegetables, 3 curries, papadam, acar, and the morru molagha (fried flavoured chilli). You can then choose to add fried chicken, chicken varuval, tenggiri fish, mutton, or fried kembong. We decided to try out the varuval and fried chicken set. The sets are delivered in eco friendly cartons with the banana leaves rolled up in the accompanying bag.
I found my set to be delicious with just the right amount of heat and spiciness. The chicken varuval is tender and tasty and I enjoyed eating my rice with the fragrant vegetable curry. I also like that my papadam is crispy despite the journey. The fried chicken set is tender and juicy but unfortunately due to the travel time it is no longer crunchy on the outside. This is to be expected though with delivery meals.
"Doze off into a lovely food induced coma.."
In addition to the banana leaf sets we also ordered the cheesy bhatura and the fried moghul biryani. The cheesy bhatura, though soggy, is very good and there’s the distinct saltiness from the melted cheese. I can only imagine that when this was hot out of the oil the cheese was bubbling and oozing out. Who can say no to melted cheese? Yum! The fried moghul biryani is a regular biryani stir fried with vegetables, shredded chicken and egg…healthy this is not…but good? Oh yes! This is exactly what it would be like if fried rice and biryani had a baby.
Do try their mango lassi if you are a fan. Theirs is sweet, tangy, and creamy yet very refreshing... especially after a heavy banana leaf meal. All that’s left to do now is to doze off into a lovely food induced coma…zZz…
Anytime you’re in the mood for banana leaf and are too lazy to drive out to get it, give Spicy Corner a call and get ready to enjoy your meal in the comfort of your own home.
