While it took about 8hours of slow cooking on the stove it was worth it. The beans are tender and full of flavour. I don’t think I can ever go back to the store bought variety again.

Ingredients
1 bag navy beans
1 large onion cut in rought chunks
4 cloves garlic, smashed with a knife
1 cup ketchup
2 Tbs dry mustard
1 tsp black pepper
½ cup Gula Melaka
2-3 bay leaves
¼ cup spicy mustard
Water

Baked beans jazzed up with gula melaka - what's not to love?
Need to soak beans for at least 8 hours or overnight in a large pot full of water before you start cooking them.
Method
Once the beans are soaked drain off the water and set the beans aside. Mix together all the ingredients in a large pot minus the water.
Add the beans to the ingredients and stir till well coated. Add water till it is just an inch above the beans.
Cook covered on a low flame for 8 hours. Check back once in a while to stir and you might need to keep adding water to just cover the beans as this will slowly dry up.
During the last hour cook uncovered and let the sauce thicken up. Enjoy!
