Aunty Nat

If you're jonesing for a delicious lunch that doesn't cost a bomb this is a great place to have a bite and allow your tastebuds to explore a wide range of flavours. The cosy setting will make you want to linger over your meal or a cup of coffee and you'll return to work destressed.

“You have to try the fried rice here, that is one of the reasons I come back time and time again. It’s soooooo good!” my colleague urged as I asked for her recommendations. So fried rice it was. We decided to order two types, the Thai fried rice with petai and the sambal belacan fried rice with beef. To go along with our two rice dishes we also got the spicy fried chicken, otak otak, and spicy long beans.

The ambience at Aunty Nat exudes effortless comfort. The contrast of wooden furniture, marble top tables, and modern photo frames adorning the walls with black and white pictures of seniors and children give the place a certain charm. One that invites you to sit and linger over your meal as the swanky jazz tunes are piped in overhead.

While waiting for the food to arrive I sipped on a cold refreshing kedondong with assam boi. The raw grassiness of the kendondong goes well with the sweet sour of the assam boi, making it a delicious drink to indulge in on a hot day.

The first to arrive was the otak otak, and I immediately see that it is darker than most I’ve had and more firm in texture. I can feel the spiciness touch my tongue upon the first bite. It is very strong in flavour and has prawns within it adding a chewy texture within the smooth custard.

"The fried rice is so good!"

As the sambal belacan fried rice was set down on the table it took everything in my power to resist the wafting aroma to take some photos. I was salivating with each click and once I took a bite I understood why the fried rice is a must have. It is bold in flavour with a punch of saltiness here, a zing of heat there, and with tender slivers of beef and crunchy pieces of long bean peppered throughout. This dish could be a complete satisfying meal on its own.

The Thai fried rice displays a whole other range of complex flavours. There is a distinct sourness further highlighted with a squeeze of lime and the subtle lemongrass gives it a beautiful fragrance. The rice is sautéed with chicken, prawns, chilli padi, egg and tomatoes. The petai was added in at our request, as it is not normally served with the Thai fried rice. We feel that it packs in that added pungency that works well overall.

The spicy fried chicken is yet another dish that is rich in flavour. It has a thick crispy spice coating of shredded ginger, turmeric, coriander, cumin, and curry leaves. The flesh on the inside is juicy and moist making for a delicious bite. It is a must try if you enjoy fried chicken.

For dessert I decided to go with one of my all time favourites, rojak, and my colleague went with the sago gula Melaka. Sadly, the rojak sauce here is not the thick pungent molasses like sauce that I adore, but one that is thin in consistency, sour, and purely made up of otak udang. This was a bit too pungent for me and I did not enjoy it. The sago gula Melaka was delicious though, and the cute presentation of the sago as a heart was an added bonus.

Prices here are reasonable for good eats in a very cosy setting. Small set lunch items range from RM9 – RM12.
