Bagan Lalang Seafood

Get out of the city and make your way to the beach for fresh seafood and mellow sunsets

Seafood

Bagan Lalang is a great place to relax, unwind, enjoy some fresh sea breezes and at the same time, delicious seafood. Believe it or not, this place is just half and hours drive from the Sepang F1 Circuit. Totally different from KL! If you arrive an hour before sunset, you will be amazed at the unspoiled beaches, fine sands and the beautiful sunset. Definitely worth the drive...

Being located close to a fishing village has also given Bagan Lalang a reputation for fresh seafood and there is no shortage of ikan bakar stalls which offers a wide range of other seafood prepared in various styles at reasonable prices. Our favourite is HMS Seri Bagan located on the far left (just before the fishing village) as you get to the beach. They have one section built on stilts that provides guests with a nice view of the sun setting over the horizon.

The fun thing at Seri Bagan is that you get to choose your own seafood. Most of the seafood are sourced from the nearby fishing village so freshness is guaranteed. There is a whole assortment of fishes from siakap, garoupa, seabass, kembung and cencaru to choose from. That is not all, they have a healthy stock of flower crabs, bamboo lala, sea prawns and for great appetizers, otak otak. Items are priced per gramme and includes cooking as well.

"Nothing like fresh cockles with a spicy dip"

So lets get fishing shall we.... armed with some tongs, some of the selections you must have are the flower crabs, seabass, bamboo lala and siakap. Weigh the flower crabs carefully, and tell the restaurateur that you want to have this souped. No other recipes! They make a legendary soup crab .. not too spicy ... but kicking flavourful. The soup is a bit light but Seri Bagan have managed to perfect their soup crab where the sweetness of the soup comes from the crabs instead of tons of sugar. This is why this broth-like soup is deliciously fun to slurp. You'll be fighting with good friends over this one...

Bamboo Lala.. we had it fried with chillies. Very good but take notice of the occasional sharp clam shards which may cut the tongue of gluttons eating at high speed. Shouldn't eat too fast anyway fellas.. not good for digestion. This dish is cooked with fried chillies, shallots, onions, some tomatoes, garlic and eggs. This is gorgeous with some rice.

It's best to have the siakap steamed. If the fish is fresh... it will be sweet and not too hard. Garoupa should be cooked merah. The garoupa is fried and Seri Bagan's secret tomato sauce is poured on top of the fish giving it a nice crunchy-soury taste. The tomatoes and pineapple in the sauce work as if in a harmonious concerto bringing music to the tastebuds.

Cooking can take about 20 minutes if the place is not busy. During weekends, it can take up to 1 hour for food to arrive. So in the meantime, with some fruit juice on the side .... order up some otak otak to start the journey. Service can be a bit crap at times, so do just chill. We only come here for the good food, and then leave before the mosquitoes starts biting at about 8pm. We suggest you do the same.

Best to come about one hour before sunset, have a leisurely walk along the beach, order up your seafood and time it to be ready just before sunset so that you can have dinner with friends and family bathing in the evening sunset and sea breezes. Now isn't that worth at least one trip up to Bagan Lalang?....
