Big Hug Burger

by Honey Ahmad on Wed, May 28, 2014

Section 15 probably has the most burger joints in one square kilometer. Big Hug has proven itself to not only serve fantastic burgers from fresh ingredients; they have also created a really appealing venue for people to hang out.

Big Hug deals in cute. Plush chairs populated by bears, a wall of kitsch and quirk and yeah, some deeelicious burgers too. 3 words. Soft-shell crab burger. Crispy fried, laid on a bed of snow crabsticks, snuggled with fresh leaf blankets within pillow-soft buns. I know, got you at soft-shell huh? What’s even more glorious is the ebiko mayonnaise dolloped on top, giving a burst of brininess to the whole affair.

Nicholas and Rick Khen, the young owners of this burger joint keep their stuff fresh. Satay burgers have meats grilled with lemongrass marinade then sandwiched in sesame buns with a sambal relish and peanut spread. The lamb burger is coated with a double dose of cheese and charred beef bacon. Another favourite is the crispy chicken chop burger, thighs double dipped and deep-fried laced with onion rings and a killer cream sauce.

Satay BurgerCan't decide between satay and a burger- get both!

Although the burgers are not cheap, portions are large so you can easily share. Take the signature Big Hug Burger. This is a well-grilled succulent patty with pineapple and smeared with curry-ish mayo. Nicholas, the partner behind the menu basically took the food he liked and deconstructed them into burgers. Buns are also made fresh on-site and baked extra large to contain the stack of fillings. No wonder most people here eat with a fork and knife.

Previously Nicholas opened another restaurant but it didn’t take off. So the second time round, he got the location right and together with Rick Khen decorated the place to appeal to their youthful clientele.

StoreYes, this place is super kawaii!

SS15 is an enclave of hip eateries, cafes and college hangouts. Big Hug fits in perfectly. If you have to wait, there are snacks to stave off hunger plus card and board games. Unlike some other eateries that cater to the young and well-heeled, they want you to linger and perhaps… order another burger to share.

They'll be serving up Mini Hugs at our I Eat Burgers Event- slider versions of their burgers. So what are you waiting for? See you on 7th June at Padang Timur, Petaling Jaya.

Watch their burger journey in Burgernation on The FriedChillies Food Network, Channel 838 this June. Here's a teaser.
