The restaurant was named after Pn Mahiran's mother whom back in the 60's used to organise trips to the holy city of Mecca and at the same time catered her home cooked food for the pilgrims. With her mother's support, Hjh Maimunah was born.
Some of the signature dishes here were introduced by their travels to Jakarta and even from the staff who came and left. One of the most popular is the Tauhu Telur. It's a simple dish of mixing soft tofu with beaten eggs, but don't be fooled by its simplicity. It's actually one of the most complicated dish to make in the restaurant and there's only two staff here who can make it perfect. It's deep fried for a few minutes to get that stringy and crispy exterior while the insides stay soft and oozy almost like melted cheese. It's served with thick kuah rojak and a sprinkle of nuts to give the dish a sweet and salty flavour- which surprisingly goes perfectly with the Tauhu Goreng. You just can't get enough of it!
The other customers favourite is the Ayam Bakar Sunda. The recipe originated from Hajah Maimunah's husband who is a Sundanese but they’ve put their own twist to it. Using a secret rub of herbs and spices, fresh chicken pieces are marinate for over 24 hours to ensure it sips through the meat. The special Kicap Cili that makes it dark, spicy and sweet is poured on just before serving. Trust us, you won't get this style of Ayam Bakar anywhere else! It's tender and almost falling off the bone while the skin stays crispy. Cicah it with the special Kicap for maximum flavour!
You can't come to Hajah Maimunah without trying their signature Rendang Daging. Pn Mahiran's very own recipe, you can't get this anywhere but here! It's a hybrid of several different rendang styles and it takes almost 5 hours to make it. They start cooking everyday at 3am to ensure the quality, and this gives it a very distinctive taste. The Daging is tender yet not too overpowering like your typical rendang. She purposely cook it that way so it's suitable for everyone's taste buds.
When in Singapore, Hajah Maimunah will worth every precious Sing Dollar you spend, for delicious unique dishes that can be enjoyed in groups! That’s how you save cost and enjoy flavorful meals that are made with passion and soul.
