This is the spot where all your porky desires will be fulfilled. Most of the dishes have some sort of pork spin, and if they don't, they're equally as delicious.
If you’re familiar with the story of the Three Little Pigs you’ll know that when he arrived at the house made of bricks the story went something like this: “Let me in, let me in,” cried the wolf. “Or I’ll huff and I’ll puff till I blow your house in!” “Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin,” said the three little pigs. So he huffed and puffed and huffed and puffed but couldn’t blow the third pig’s house down. And the pigs lived happily ever after.
At Hoofed however, though it’s made of bricks and even has a dome ceiling made of bricks, the wolf must have found a way in because this is one porkified menu. Pigs here are served up on a wooden board for dinner. It is also a chilled out spot that is a great place to kick back with friends and indulge in a great meal.
"We wanted to create something with a neighbourhood feel that serves good food and wine and we wanted to focus mainly on pork because there aren't many restaurants that have an almost full pork menu. We have a whole theme surrounding it with the decor including pictures of pigs," says Ernest Ong, one of the owners of Hoofed. "We chose this area because we run Tom, Dick and Harry's downstairs which is a pub concept and it was convenient to use the second floor for something else."
"Porcine and divine..."
The suckling pig served here is why you must visit! Imagine a pig served whole, head and all, for you to tuck into. This is perfect for large groups to share with some dishes on the side. When it came to the table I was slightly taken aback as I’m not used to seeing an entire pig splayed out for me to eat. Once I got past it, I was rewarded with deliciousness. The crackling is crisp giving way to tender succulent meat. When done right, you don’t even need a knife to cut into it, some places use the edges of plates to divvy it up just to show how moist and soft the meat is. Hoofed does it right. On a good night they dish out about seven piglets. Mmmm…piglets.
If you can’t bear to have your meal staring you down as you happily chomp away, go for the other porcine options such as the roast pork belly or the spare ribs. I love the pork belly which has a beautiful crackling that gave a nice crunch between my teeth. My favourite food texture is anything crisp or crunchy so this is dish I thoroughly enjoy. The layer of fat and meat beneath it just melts in your mouth. So... effing... good!
Another favourite of mine is the bacon fried rice. What can be more sinfully comforting? The rice is fluffy with bits of bacon, waxed sausages, egg, and some mushrooms for earthiness. For me this is the perfect carb loaded meal with so many yummy yet naughty ingredients. Well, I guess sometimes it’s good to be bad!
If you’re looking for something on the lighter side, go for the seared codfish (one of the few un-porky items). The flesh is flaky and moist with a crisp skin. It is served with charred peppers and a tomatoey puree. The best part is the mashed potatoes! It has a great balance of being smooth and yet still having some texture. And it’s oh-so-creamy!
If you still have space after all that pork, end your meal with something sweet like the brownies ala mode or the bananarama. The brownie is rich and decadent with bits of chopped walnuts strewn throughout. The bananarama is slices of ripe bananas served with creamy custard, chocolate sauce and sprinkled with cookie crumbs. You might want to unbutton your pants after a meal like this because you’ll be stuffed to the brim with a huge smile on your face.
