I've been coming here so often I should get a loyalty card! But seriously, I come for the morning pastries and totally stay for the roast duck... check it out!

One of my favourite places to have duck rice at the moment is Kenny Hills Bistro. A sister restaurant to Kenny Hills Bakers, they have made this little strip of shops underneath one of the KL’s oldest flats happening again.

I found out later that the duck chef has over 30 years of experience making the tasty roast meat which is firm and succulent with a good skin and fat ratio. Once sometime ago Four Seasons opened a branch in KL which I ate almost every week and then it closed. I am glad that one of their chefs found a new kitchen. The chilli oil that comes with it (I always order extra) is solid too and that with a bit of duck rendering on the side will sort out all your duck cravings. Be sure to book it if you want to have it for dinner. It’s all gone by lunchtime usually.

There are other good stuff on the menu too. Snacks include the popular salted egg squid you can pick your hands and suck them off. I’ve tried several things like the Nasi Lemak (pretty good) and the Soba Noodles done pasta-style with creamy sesame sauce. It’s got lots of mushrooms on top and then they fry up some seaweed nice and crisp to top it off. This is what I like, little flares of texture like this in my dish.

You can of course order dessert that comes from the bakery a few doors down. Crowd pleasers like the peach strudle, lemon meringue tarts and chocolate tarts are tasty. I have spent many happy mornings working in the hubbub that is the bakery letting the scent of baking and fresh coffee envelop me. I was there when it was just a half shoplot and I could just about perch inside on a stool with my laptop. Now it’s the full shoplot and I just love the vibe. It makes good use of the bones of the old flats, keeping the retro flooring and just keeping it real.

Definitely two of my favourite spots in the KL eating landscape.
