Khunthai Authentic Thai Restaurant

by Ali on Mon, July 24, 2017

Khuntai serves authentic Thai Cuisine. They have quite a few branches around town and serves up all your Thai favourites from hot Tomyums to scrumptious curries. The Cheras branch is particularly spacious and good for large groups...

Khuntai literally means “Thai People” and they came from north of the border bringing authentic Thai dishes and recipes. Now Khuntai has several branches in Malaysia. The one I visited in Cheras has a nice ambiance with a fish pond running across the restaurant. It is a large and airy restaurant, perfect for gatherings.

Let's jump into the main reason why we are here, the Tom Yum. I went with the spicy white Tom Yum. The Tom Yum comes in a classic hot pot and it's littered with seafood and vegetables. The soup is spicy, and can be a little strong for those with a more delicate constitution. My friends who enjoy spicy food commented the heat is just nice. The prawns are cooked lovingly, the texture is not rubbery and the meat has absorbed all the yummy-ness from the soup. Tom Yum soothes my soul and this hits the spot.

Next up I ordered my personal favourite, Green Curry Chicken. There is something about the creamy and spiciness of the green curry just makes me come back for more. The taste of the curry is mild but the heat builds up faster and before you know it, you'll be wiping sweat from your brow. In the clay pot, you'll also get some winter melons and eggplants.

There are other dishes here like Kheng Som, a sour, spicy Southern Thai stew and of course spicy salads with a balance of hot, sour, spicy and funky. Khuntai is one of the few restaurants where the recipes are not altered to suit the tastebuds of the locals. If you want something authentic and new, I'll highly recommend coming here with some friends on tow.
