Sometimes, the aroma of seafood is so strong that we let our stomachs do the driving. This time, it landed us in Tanjung Tualang, Perak. This town is well known for its fresh water prawns and its seafood offerings. How far is it from Ipoh, we hear? It's about forty minutes drive through many palm oil plantations until we arrived at Kim Seng's. Wasting little precious eating time, we ordered sweet and sour crab, teochew steamed cat fish, oyster omelettes, some fried rice and the most irresistible steamed fresh water prawns this side of town!
"Fresh fat prawns, enough said"
The first delicacy to arrive was the oyster omelette. It was hot, crispy on the outside and the oysters were just so fresh. Five minutes was all it took to clean all evidence of any oyster omelette on the table. The sweet and sour crab reminds me more of the chili crab I had in Singapore. On top of being sweet and sour, this dish had a kick of spices as a result of the chillies they put in the dish. The crab tasted very good, lap all up when its is still hot. The teochew fish was a fat catfish, and with the smooth and soft meat, wonderfully delicious...
Saving the best from last... the best of course, is the steamed fresh water prawns that are locally bred in the Tanjung Tualang area. The prawn is basically steamed and egg white is added to the sauce to give it a creamy taste. The flesh was very sweet and the prawn has 'kou' (Cantonese) at the head of the prawn. 'Kou' is that yellowish and greenish stuff on the head of the prawn. It tastes a little bitter but it's damn good. We also had this Jelly drink called 'Wan Tau Long' (Cantonese). Its jelly on top of ice with lime juice giving a nice sweet and sour taste. Very addictive..... Can't wait for my next trip to Tanjung Tualang...
