A burger that is steamed? Who would have thought! This one is pretty damn good and even tastes like the famous prosperity burger. Give it a try and you may never go back to regular grilled burgers again.
I have a little treat for burger lovers out there. About a year and a half ago, two brothers in Kelana Jaya named Mad and Afzal decided to open a burger stand with a bit of a twist; Steamed Ramly Burgers. During the day, the duo sell nasi lemak not far away (near the Health Clinic), by night they are happily steaming burgers, the oblong and the round kind. Their selections are quite impressive. Chicken, Beef, Lamb, Venison, Rabbit and Ostrich (only Chicken and Beef is Ramly's).
One brother mans the steamer grill section, and the other packs the burgers. The burger patty is first steamed in a stainless steel steamer for a few minutes and then transferred to a mobile gas griller, believe it or not. The steamed grilled burger is then dipped into a black pepper sauce pot for a few minutes before being fished out and handed to the 'packing' section.
Several things are done here. If someone orders a special, Afzal cracks open an egg, expertly spreads it on the flat pan and after a few moments, wraps the steamed burger with it. Buns are also toasted on this flat pan and the thing is, instead of using margarine or planta, they use vegetable shortening as the bun spread. Nice! Gives it the 'lemak'/rich taste. Next, styrofoam boxes are taken out and the burger is packed. By this time, patrons already have the "tak tahan look" on their faces. They know how good this will taste. Bun, mayo, salad, burger, onions, chili, secret sauce and lastly bun is neatly packed in. Basic set is RM2.80! or have it your own way with double burger, cheese top up, single egg wrap or go crazy with everything on Double Special Cheese at RM6.00!
"Happiness in a styrofoam box..."
They also specialise in oblong burgers, a new craze amongst burger fans. A prosperity burger lookalike. At this place, you can have it customised your way, wrapped with eggs, cheese, double decker oblongs... the works. This one gets wrapped in wax paper instead of styrofoam.
Verdict? OMG orgasmic! For both the regular round ones and oblong versions. If I have to choose a winner, my top pick is the beef oblongs with the whole works.. double oblongs, cheese, extra onions, black pepper sauce, egg special. I don't really do ostrich, rabbit and venison but you are welcome to try. The lamb burger is fantastic too. If you want it to taste more like prosperity, hold the mayo, no egg and extra onions and black pepper sauce. You will be surprised. Close enough in terms of taste and available all year round.
So what's the big deal with steamed burgers then? My initial question was, can it hold shape ah? Wouldn't it turn into mush? Isn't it bland? The answer is Yes, Nope and Nope. Apparently steaming retains the flavour of the burger whilst cooking it. Grilling melts the fat but since the already steamed burger has a high water content, it gives the burger a nice charred taste but still keeps it moist and juicy. I wonder what will happen if they grill it first before steaming it? I dont think that it will have the same taste. Their burgers have a nice, healthy and clean taste. Not greasy.
They start their mobile wonder truck at about 8pm everyday plying the road between the police headquarters and giant. You can't miss it. Watch out for the queue or the big a*s sign on the truck that says KJ Burger Steam & Grill. Happiness sometimes does come in a small white styrofoam box... and a neatly packed wax paper wrap.
