Man of Man Burger Kukus Lava is a success story we all love to hear: young dude opens a stall few years back, and now has two restaurants to his name. This success can probably be attributed to a simple theme: fun food! With colourful and tasty burgers, we check out his place at Damansara Damai..

THE KRABBY PATTY EXISTS IN DAMANSARA DAMAI. Seriously, the Krabby Patty, along with a Spongebob and a Patrick burger, are alive (sort of) and well at Man Burger Kukus Lava in Damansara Damai. Fans of the cartoon show should be excited. What did Man Lava do, cast a net over Bikini Bottom?
Well, a few years ago the eponymous Man started a burger stall at Damansara Damai. He was riding the burger bakar wave, but decided he needed to have a USP. So Man and his wife decided to steam his patties first before grilling it. “Customers didn’t like the soft, soggy texture of steamed patties. They preferred the crispiness and crust of a grilled item,” says Man and his wife, Syazwani.
So they started selling steam-grilled burgers, which is still pretty unique in the burger bakar category. The steaming cooks the patties through but ensures that they remain juicy and tender. A quick blast on a roaring grill to crisp up the edges and they are good to go.
Burgers being steamed..
“We were selling 50 to 100 burgers a day, and we thought that was pretty good back then,” recalls Man of his smaller, road-side stall days. But that small road-side stall grew, and grew, and now he has a full size restaurant just up the road (literally) from where his stall used to be. The place is comfortable and a great place to lepak with friends, as it is open air and surrounded by shady trees. You can watch your burgers being made at the open air kitchen.
The ‘Lava’ in the name comes from the fact that the burgers here come very, VERY generously slathered in sauces: a volcanic explosion of bright green wasabi mayo, thousand island, yellow cheese sauce and of course, black pepper. The burgers are pretty much ‘banjir’ style, like a roti canai! Then one day they came up with the idea of naming the burgers after cartoon characters.
“Everyone that receives our burgers will take a picture first because our burgers look fun!,” says Man.
The amiable Man Lava and Syazwani..
Indeed, they do. The Mr. Krabs is a steam-grilled beef or chicken patty in a red, home-made bun. Then two slices of chicken ham are propped on skewers with cherry tomatoes. It looks spot on like Mr. Krabs from Spongebob Squarepants.
Hello Mr. Krabs!
Not to forget they got a square, Spongebob patty and a really thick, fat Patrick patty as well! The burgers are all well cooked; juicy and moist from the steaming with a nice, char-grilled touch from flames. The sauces, despite the colours, are quite well balanced and not overpowering. Most of their burgers are home-made. They’ve even started to make the buns themselves.
Man Lava also has various other items on the menu: an ostrich burger(!), meatballs, and even a kid's menus. They’re pretty active on social networks and have quite a following. With good reason, I might add. The burgers here are fun, tasty stuff that are excellent to have with friends and family. It’s food that becomes a talking point and brings people together.
That’s always a win in our book.
