This renowned restaurant had very humble beginnings. From a simple zinc roofed hut in the vicinity of motorbike workshops, it has now expanded to 3 double storey shop lots! Such is the popularity and fame of New Paris. So us Foodsters decided to give it a try and see what the lure of this Chinese restaurant is all about.
Service was very efficient. Upon approaching the entrance, staff are already pouncing on you asking for how many diners and what type of tables preferred. Alternatively you can make reservations before coming. Once our party was seated, we asked for recommendations from the person taking our order. Unfortunately he wasn't very helpful other than just rattling on about the type of dishes that could be cooked from the meat we requested. In fact, he gave us a typical salesman pitch - "All our dishes are good." Which made us even more indecisive and confused!
We were quite surprised that dishes started arriving in quick succession at our table within 10 minutes! Now that's efficiency. First up was the steamed siakap fish ala Teochew style. This was done just nice with the right amount of tomatoes, salted veggies and piquancy to the sauce. The fish was very fresh and steamed just right - firm and moist. Even the sauce was good enough to slurp alone or add to the rice. All thumbs up!
"The dishes start arriving after 10 minutes"
Next were the clams (lala) fried with ginger and spring onions. No complains about the shellfish, but the dish was hardly outstanding and pretty run-of-the-mill. Then came the 'chew pai taufoo' which was deep fried soft tofu topped with a minced pork sauce and scallions. Now this was not bad at all. The tofu was crisp on the outside but soft and smooth on the inside. The sauce also went really well and gave a really yummy flavour to the tofu! We polished off this dish soon enough.
Another notable dish was the deep fried pork trotters. Now this is soooo good (be warned, reading the following may be hazardous to your health). The skin was crispy golden while the meat was tender, succulent and literally fell off the bone. Add a little sweet plum sauce and you're in cholesterol heaven! A taste of piggy goodness... yummmm!
The last dish to cleanse off the oil and grease was kale (kailan) shoots lightly fried in garlic. This I like. Simple food that made a nice ending to a very indulgent meal.Overall, food was quite palatable and super speedy. And affordable too! For the amount we ate, it came to less than RM20 per head! I think the quality is very much home-cooked comfort food. It just feels homey and its honest to goodness flavour makes you feel like mom/granny just whipped something from the kitchen. Think of New Paris as good ole Chinese comfort food. If you're looking for affordability and speedy home cooking/ service in the heart of PJ, then New Paris is the place to be. Just sit-order-eat-pay and you're good to go! NEXT!
lets go there then..
