Who wants some Ngah Choi Kai(Bean sprouts chicken)? BSC stirs much 'eating passion' and 'stomach growls' whenever I'm anywhere close to Ipoh. If your stomach is lucky enough to follow you there, try the more famous shop at Old Wong's or the more relaxed at Onn Kee's. Little separates the taste and quality of the bean sprouts chicken between them two. But they are still fighting for who's better...
For me, it's always the characteristically fat, juicy and sweet Ipoh beansprouts that I like. Deliciously blanched with some soy sauce and garlic, the chef's skill managed to perfectly retain the beansprouts springiness whilst making it still extremely juicy. If you've not seen an Ipoh beansprout, you'd probably be surprised that it's about twice as big as the ones we normally get here. It's due to the Ipoh water (they say...), it's full of minerals... making it plump, juicy and crunchy.
"It must be the minerals in the water"
And the boiled chicken is very tender. Although, both the bean sprouts and chicken are a little oily (you will see a layer of oil floating on top of a layer of soya sauce), but who cares?... when we're done, there's nothing left anyway. There are about four to five shops selling bean spouts chicken, three of which belongs to Onn Kee. There is normally ample place for everyone except Chinese New Year when it becomes a madhouse everywhere in Ipoh.
Anyway, if you think about it, the bean sprouts chicken is really a balanced dish. They have vitamin C from the cucumbers, protein and fat from the chicken and carbohydrates from the noodles. It's always a pleasure eating bean sprouts chicken in Ipoh.
